those that claim Empire is better than it need to realize that whereas A New Hope is narratively complete and can stand on its own merits without Ewoks, Empire isn't complete, and that which completes it guarantees them.

in summary: it's not a superfluous sequel, and it doesn't mangle original material that's superior to it. so I have to go with this one.

Not a fair match. Aliens is a sequel, so you get two movies for the price of one as opposed to the others, which wipe out whole franchises. So Aliens has to go for balance,sake and take Alien with it.
