I think it could work but only if the explanation isn't too much of an ass pull.
The side material always specifically pointed out that Snoke and the Knights of Ren are dark siders but not Sith, possibly a rival cult if the Sith return. It would be fun to have the First Order turn out to have a secret division that funded a Sith army to take over FO leadership when most of the grunt work has been done by FO troopers. The stupid thing is just to define who these Sith are when Sheev was the last one.
