At it's core, it should be about how growing up affects all these kids and how some of them grow closer, some of them grows apart and some of them change. But they never do. Will should be a mess after what he's been through, Eleven should have alot bigger issues with letting people into her personal space than she does, etc etc.

None of the kids seems to have any trauma at all, which they all would have if they had experienced half the shit they've been through.

Will's D&D scene should have been of the emotional gut punches of the season, but it just falls completely flat because the writers are more preoccupied with creating their 80's retro homage with pop cultural references than a show actually about something like a group of kids growing up through hardship.

They completely dropped the ball on this and it could have been genuinely great, but all it is, is "hey, remember the 80's?"
