Don't go to trade school. Apply to your local IBEW's "JATC" program. Your dad's friend might be able to tell you more about it and maybe even help you nepotism your way into the program/past the interview.

It's tough work (even though sparky is considered a "princess trade"), you will be working outdoors when its hot or cold, and you will be lifting/pulling heavy shit. You might work 10 hour shifts and be on your feet all day with just a quick 30 minute lunch break at noon, and there's gonna be days when you get shit on for not knowing anything (even though the people you're working for/with know you don't know anything). It's genuinely rewarding and worth it though if you luck out and get paired up with a good contractor/journeyman who is willing to let you learn, provided you show initiative. There's so much more I could tell you about it, but the key advice I can give you is this:

>do the IBEW/JATC apprenticeship program. It's an "earn while you learn" deal so you can learn the basics of the trade and after 4-5 years of that, you ideally worked enough hours qualifying you to take (and hopefully pass) your state's journeyman electrician licensing exam
>you're basically going to be someones bitch for 4-5 years but you get paid for it and you get to learn the trade.
