So I just finished re-watching s01e01. It's actually not that strict at following the book than I remembered, basically all the dialogue is different than it is in the book, but the point of it remains the same. We don't see white walkers like we do in the prologue, only the shadow of one.
The Dothraki are a mess. They are so caricature savages that I find it hard to belive they got away with showing bown people like that. Dothraki should be like this mix of mongolian and central asian cultures, but in the show they are mostly slavs with brown paint on. Essos is portrayed completely wrong already in the first episode. Also the decision to make Drogo rape Daenerys is not a very good one.
I think the episode should have focused on the Starks in Winterfell, Jon Arryn's death and king Robert's visit to the north. Lysa's letter should have gotten more attention and should have been the centre piece of the episode. Dany's wedding and Bran's fall I would move to the next episode.
Overall, still a good pilot, everything has a medieval vibe, rather than a fantasy one, good actors and good production values, good music and good direction. Good original dialogue, especially the lines Catelyn got.

So I think first episode should be Jon Arryn's death and Bobby's trip to north and Lysa's letter. second episode should be Bran's fall and the reactions to it. At this point most major characters are all in Winterfell, so this would be a good chance for the viewer to get to know the characters better. The HBO's pilot is about pretty white girl forced to marry big brown savage man and queen fucks her brother. Dany and Viserys should be introduced in episode 1 and Dany's wedding should be in episode 2. Spreading out the plot like this would have made a better thing in the long run. But the HBO's pilot is still decent, I'm not hating on that.

Regardless of her intentions, she saved Jon Snow, therefore saving the world from the Mad Queen. You're forgetting how Ned, Catelyn, Robb were also ok with having their families killed but failed. Ned despite finally being King's Hand and having some authority chose to throw it away for MUH HONOR despite knowing his family was in danger at the time. He was a retard who chooses honor over his family's lives. Catelyn kidnapped Tyrion knowing the Lannisters are more powerful than any army she can ever hope to have, therefore putting her family's lives in danger. She also released Jamie despite him being the only leverage they had in the war. Robb executed Kastarck despite being told he would lose half his men/therfore lose the war/therefore lose his and his family's lives. But he still does it for MUH HONOR.
