The woman was probably closest to the truth. The men just struck me as really vain and untrustworthy.

see this is why i think it was a mistake from kurosawa to invent the woodcutter's testimony (its not in the original short story). he simply couldnt help himself and had to put in a positive humanistic theme and its hurtful to the whole point of the movie because many people mistakenly think that the woodcutter is the reliable narrator or the self insert for the audience

I think it's better off because of that, because that means there's someone people can fall for. Personally, I do think the woodcutter is most believable, but I do see and understand how he can be talking out of his ass as well.
