Alexey Semyonov, an animator from Moscow who works under the pseudonym Lazy Square, has released a gloomy version ofThe Simpsons’ opening sequence that depicts a stereotypical version of a Russian family’s daily routine. The results are rather depressing: the son steals a teenager’s skateboard, the father steals from work, the mother curses at a grocery store cashier, and the daughter is threatened by police. It all ends in spilled borsch and domestic violence.
Lazy Square has created other short animations that feature a similar combination of grim humor and creative visuals. For example, one of his works depicts a liquid terminator who transforms into a killer spoon.
Another is about a mortgage advertisement gone very much awry.
Lazy Square has also created a 30-second animation depicting 30 years of his life. The piece is set to the classic Soviet rock number “Waiting for Change.”
