What is it like watching Russian language films in their native tongue? Is it a substantially different experience? Do you think that you sometimes get really different meanings on the same piece of dialogue that a monolingual English speaker will never appreciate like deadpan humour that just gets lost in translation?
>>Sofia Coppola's ass
best part of the film unless you are a homo or woman, then it's a young Andy Garcia.

To be quite frank, it was a surprise. I have absolutely zero fucking time for these dreamy exposition films that are faggy and dreamscapey and philosophical but I got on okay with it.
The budget constraints, I am guessing, made the encounters with the supernatural very interesting as much is done without being said or shown.
As a recovering plot-fag, I found it hard to not be thinking about the large mythology or lore that must be behind the events and it took a bit of effort to really watch it and appreciate for what it is, which is a film about pacing and characters, and atmosphere.
I was a bit lucky really as I started it about 11pm one night after a long day thinking I could do it jsut fine then saw it is nearly three hours long. I watched maybe a third and then saved the rest for the next night, so it was more manageable, but I think the slow build was sacrificed, so ups and downs there.
I would say don't watch it when you are bored with nothing to do, watch it when you are really in the mood for some exploration and want to appreciate some solid direction.
It's really a painting in motion rather than a movie. It was a positive experience though.
The first one is garbage, the second one is okay I guess, the third one is pretty good, nothing special, but quite well executed, fairly good storytelling and pretty well acted. Suffice to say, I had a blast watching this. If you love low-budgeted 90s neonoirs, you should enjoy Sweet Poison quite a bit. Bitter Vengeance is diverting enough, but has a pretty implausible ending, while Prime Suspect is a messy piece of crap.
>i think it's reasonable to assume that happens. but that shouldn't stop you, try watching some. i recommend "The Autumn Marathon"
I have seen some and don't let it stop me, but sometimes I think a Russian is probably getting something out of it I won't ever understand.
Like watching Monty Python with my American friends (I am British). They laugh at the cookiness of it, but to them, it is childrens humour, to Brits it is something more clever and satirical.
So what do you do while you are dilating?
Under The Skin
Fallen Angels
Harvey
It worked out for me as an American. Growing up, I was glued to my set every time a new Flying Circus episode was on for the "cookiness" of it. But as I became older I appreciated them on a whole diffrerent level (clever and satirical).
well maybe a poor example, but I am sure you know what I mean, there are cultural differences like tone of voice or eye contact between characters that might appear stand offish to me but intimate or familiar to a Russian. Or body language that appears stony or anti social to me but is just assertive to a native Russian.
