Honestly I have no clue why he would try to kill Asuka. After he saved mankind. I don’t know what they were trying to say with this scene. Maybe that mankind will still trying to hurt things and only compasion will stop them? Idk

Because Shinji was the only one who ever truly cared about Rei (Gendo considered her an object) and she had received all of the knowledge of her prior clones through becoming Lilith, Shinji is given the option of either existing unliving in a world with no problems and only happiness and connection with everyone through the soul by Rei (now Lilith), but decides after getting a taste of what this undying eternity is like that pain is okay and a crucial part to being living and feeling happiness, despite all of his selfishness in the past. Because this was so late in the process, he gets what he wants (a reality and world that relies on suffering returns again), but it fucks up heavily, essentially killing Lilith. Shinji is back on Earth, now populated exclusively by him and Asuka, Asuka now not only being someone who conflicts with him in ways to cope (which brings them closer AND further from each other in the most abusive relationship way possible), but now knows how he jacked off on her (which, additionally, I think was a criticism of the fanbase that had grown and their attraction to helpless, submissive women). Asuka thinks she understands how Shinji feels, but as he falls under her touch, similar to how he had done before, she realizes that nothing has changed. Shinji is still weak. He's still insecure. To her, he's disgusting. They are surrounded by the blood of everyone lost in Shinji's (honestly reasonable, especially given his age) selfishness. They are now Adam and Eve.

At least, that's how I interpret it, haha. Great movie!
