Does this thing have supernatural powers or not? In season 1 it can literally jump into our reality at its own discretion and drops through ceilings and tries to claw through walls. Its mere presence in our world makes lights flicker. It's not just an animal, it's like a demonic force by itself. It literally teleported behind Will and whisked immediately whisked him off into another dimension. I even thought that its supernatural nature was a large part of the rift opening; it wasn't just that Eleven was generally freaked out by its presence, she was touched by a malevolent power and had no idea what she was really dealing with.

And then in Season 2 the dogs are just dumb carnivorous animals and in Season 3 again the demogorgon is something you can trap in a cage? If you want to argue its powers require the/a gate to be open, then technically any demogorgon they manage to capture should display the ability to teleport at will and inadvertently make lights flicker.

Seems like a huge retcon to me.
