Well its clear that for season 4, El's powers will slowly come back and she will eventually search for Hopper because she misses him. Hopper jumped into the gate at the mall before it closed and got stuck in the upside down, then captured by the Russians. This will bring Will, El and Joyce back to Hawkins and then find Hopper and fight the mind flayer in the upside down.

Season 3 felt like it was directed by the Kung Fury guy with going full ham with 80s shit with the neon lights and commies working underground in a mall. Felt very cartoon compared to how low key the the last 2 seasons were.

The first season wasn't hackneyed but the third season is basically Goldbergs tier dude80s and the reason why is that half this show's adults are coke heads now because it's so dude80s.

Eleven and Will and family moving is just their way of doing a time skip but they obviously can't time skip too far otherwise they'll land in the 90s and lose that 80s vibe.

5 seasons is the perfect length for a show. So that could work

A good example is that in The Goonies, mouth can speak half-assed Mexican to translate a treasure map, and you buy it because Mouth has a Prince t-shirt and thinks he's hot shit, hence the perfect nickname, and Feldman was a precocious even iconic child actor. Whereas Season 3 pays homage to the Goonies by having a dirty looking wagie girl who works at a mall after high school know fluent Russian and three other languages, and uses it to trick a KGB blackops crew because Stripes and Spies Like Us are le 80s, when the uniform tone is basically modern Goonies meets It.

To which the Duffers would say, yeah bro, but 80s sequels were always bigger, dumber, and badder in both senses. But you can't be meta without being smart because then you're just lazy rich hacks.
