I think people are quick to excuse rust's inappropriate conduct, calling him autistic. It was a power move for sure. Remember when Rust showed up to his house drunk and Marty called someone to pick him up? Rust said nah I think i'll stay.

I don't think it showed Rust even genuinely cared about Marty, I think he wanted him to have a stable life so they could smoothly run their investigation. He was probably tired of Marty chasing pussy instead of focusing on the investigation.
