Is there a term for when all the individual parts were great, but the creation as a whole felt weak? Because that's how it felt to me. Really well made and some really fun sequences and stuff, but after it was all said and done it feels really underdeveloped, meandering, and forgettable. Enjoyed the humor. Would say it's worse than Hereditary and the VVVVitch.

Everyone who saw it wanted to leave except for Christian and the black dude who wanted to write their thesis on the culture. It’s fucked up, but it’s interesting. The disappearances had logical explanations for each like with Mark running off with that girl to fuck around with and the black guy running off with the sacred text. They weren’t gone for too long for them to think something was really wrong before Christian and Dani were captured and drugged up even more. The only one who got a bad feeling from the start was Dani with the couple’s disappearance, but Christian didn’t give a fuck when she told him her concerns.

I liked the visuals and the acting but it kind of felt like ari aster went on an ingmar bergman binge and watched the wicker man one too many times. He presented themes of cultural relativism, traditionalism, and collectivism but didn't really do shit with. Overall I thought it wasn't terrible but it was still pretty disappointing.

Not as good as Hereditary, but it had a lot of interesting moments. The parts I found most unsettling were Dani's bonding with the village, like the her communicating with the dancer despite them both speaking nonsense, or Dani's complete breakdown seeing Christian fucking that redhead and the women mimicking her wailing. I guess a central theme to Midsommar is empathy because in regards to Dani, the cultists express empathy and bring her to their level of madness, while Christian dies ultimately because of his lack of empathy.

normally when I go see an arty movie in a crowded cinema and people start laughing its clearly just a juvenile outwards response to being uncomfortable. But this movie I can't blame them, I was laughing too at the male leads dumbfounded expression the entire climax. This guy's visuals are fantastic but he really needs to work with a writer or editor because his writing can be sloppy as fuck. He did a horrendous job tying the trauma of her family dying into what she was experiencing in the village.
