The reason Hollywood white washes and black washes characters is because they pander to whichever group is considered the upper middle class in America. Whichever group of people are more likely to goto the movies and produce a large box office haul are who hollywood care about. Hollywood is not woke, they are extremely greedy capitalists and they do whatever will make them the most money.
Upper middle class to upper class people in America are the ones going to see movies at the cinema, NOT the majority of Americans. So what the majority of people want is irrelevant, just what the people who actually likely to go and pay for a night out at the movies to produce tens to hundreds of millions of dollars box office numbers.
20-30 years ago Republicans were the upper middle class to upper class Americans and they have an in-group preference (they prefer to see white characters in movies) so Hollywood gave them what they wanted. Now in 2019 the upper middle class to upper class are Democrats and on the left, and these people have an out of group preference (they prefer to not see white people in movies).
This is the richer people in our society getting what they want and that is how it has always worked, simple as that.
Our culture isn't changing, Hollywood just reflects the upper echelons of our societies wishes. They pander to the richer portions of our society, the people more likely to spend money.
Also the modern left have a victim savior complex, so Hollywood movie studios use this to their advantage. They create a character and then fabricate a victim narrative around it and link it to their hundred million dollar movie to capitalize off it (captain marvel, ghostbusters 2018, batmwoman tv series etc instigated trolls and then when trolls attacked they turned themselves into a victim), this then encourages these rich white liberals to go and see the movies that are being "victimized" by "vicious trolls" that they themselves baited for profit.

True, actually. This is why I can never get into all the fear-mongering though that "omg society is changing / collapsing!". Not that I am on either side of the fence regarding such narratives, but the simple fact is (as someone who has lived on both sides of the fence, so I've been inside and outside the progressive urbanite bubble) is that most people are right-center.
A lot of fear on the part of both the left and the right is a misconceived view that society just passively swallows whatever media throws at them, but there is a pretty consistent norm of something somewhere between mild conservatism and relaxed liberalism that is just the default that comes from people having families, which most people do.

honestly, there's no real use trying to stop climate change. its going to happen. these measures of cutting emissions and "going green" came a bit too late.
