Why?

I dont know. I remember it shredding everyone else

Where were 90% of the bots wedges on wheels? They should have had a rule that stated your bot had to be at least kinda interesting.

Was there a rule against using super-powerful magnets? I always thought a good idea was to have a magnet and a drill that way you could magnet your bot to the other and then just drill right into them. Or saw them maybe. But a sufficiently large magnet would fuck up the electronics on its own.

Yeah those were bs but hard to argue they weren't effective.

There should've been more that just hit hard enough to dislodge some of the innards.

i think there was. same with projectiles and flamethrowers

>that one contestant that put a gift box on his robot and when the opponent hit it a net exploded and tangled the other robot

Attached: 1534799667604.jpg (301x300, 43K)

Based

They had all sorts of rules about what your bot could be so anything interesting would probably cut into your allowances for weight, cost or whatever they were.
What they ought to have done is make one that was all out - people would have probably showed up with stuff that made the house robots look like shit.

>net fags

All the OP bots get banned, that’s why the show sucks, because there are only 1 model that works and is t considered illegal.

Why did nobody make a bot that was just an abrasive chop saw on wheels that could slice robots in half?

I used to go over to the Cow Palace and watch these things live. Was absolutely some of the best fun I've ever had.

I wish TechTV was still around.

So exciting.

How to fix this shit show.
Make it all not melee. The bots now shoot small mm guns, the show because about maneuverability .
Make it 10 bots vs 10 bots that require keeping territory and advancing for points.

Changed the meta from .5mm aluminium shells to actually armouring the robots. Early Hypnodisc was brutal because nobody expected it.

Do americans really spend money on watching this kids stuff?

It's based because something interesting and unexpected happened for once, the show would be better with less rules and more creativity

yikers

Weren't the ones where the entire outside spun around much worse? Everything that touched them got shredded.

>Can't hit the robot without getting yourself hit by the equivalent of an axe travelling at 30mph

hypnodisc was op as shit

i remember before it came out and everyone thought it'd be a bunch of cool robots completely destroying each other. hypnodisc was the only one that slightly lived up to that promise, and that was only against piss weak school project-bots.

everything else was just an RC car with a flipper. all the cool weaponry was 99% ineffective and they'd try and make some big deal out of a few scratches or dents after.

sgt bash was the biggest joke. a luke warm yellow flame that is only effective against the one memebot that covered itself in fur.

based

idk as a little kid I thought it was cool

Extremely unbased and bluepilled

Engineering-wise I think Razer is a superior concept, it wasn't as reliable as Hypnodisc though iirc

Hypnodisc was a monster against weak armour but unreliable as fuck. There were only a few times it actually shredded opponents like it was supposed to. Carbide is much scarier.

How do you win?

Where' Smee and Maimen?

Anyone here ever see the robot wars live back in the day?

Nu-Matilda and Shunt are the only house robots that still have soul after they ruined Killalot and put Bash on the scrapheap. Matilda is terrifying.

chads 2 was based

I thought flame throwers were allowed? They always seemed useless as rick though, same with drones

They were made to be functional and win at the meta, not look "interesting"

Because spinners are needed to but wedges in their place

Mods are always fags, even irl

Meta is the focus on purely the mechanics over fluff. It prioritises optimal strategy for victory over all other elements, including design, enjoyment or showmanship

Why is the American version so shitty? UK Robot Wars had that 90s-early 2000s dark grungy aesthetic to it, nothing ever looked clean and polished. Bots were made with themes and styles. It made it funnier when joke bots like Diotoir came along. People (except team Razer) could have fun making dumb designs without caring about being practical.
In Battlebots everything looks sterile, the lighting is flat, and aside from a colour scheme the bots are all indistuinguishable from each other.

Attached: diotoir.jpg (960x660, 81K)

is that Projared??

this, less rules would be better for this format, let the creativity of the engineers solve the problem with overpowered robots

an OP robot is only OP as long as nobody designs a more brutal robot to counter it

Is electricity banned?

Most effective tactic available. Basically whatever strategy wins under current rules. Back in the OG series flipbots ruled the meta, nowadays spinning weapons are more powerful, just compare Hypno Disc to Carbide. If RW staff allowed projectile weapons, the meta would change and every robot would be packing armour-piercing rounds.

Eh, the revamped robot wars was crap too. shitty boring bots, spent way too long on team's backstories and shit instead of making lawn mowers fight

also fuck Fog Of War. What twat came upwith blanketing the arena with fog machines, meaning nobody can see anything and everyone just stops moving for 30 seconds until it clears

Mid to late 2000’s shit on British networks look like they were filmed in the 90’s, it’s absolutely mind blowing how far behind you guys were at that time. I have been watching old episodes of Top Gear and it really shows this.

www.robotwars.tv/media/1243/robot-wars-build-rules.pdf

>13.2.4 Electromagnetic Fields
>Electromagnetic fields from permanent or electromagnets, which affect another robots electronics

The working is kinda ambiguous, but I'm guessing it means all magnets are outlawed.

>which affect another robots electronics

So you could have just a regular magnet and hang them in the air flailing helpessly?

As a weapon, yes.

thatts hilarious

What was that one that lasted like one series? Growler or something?

I can't tell if it's saying magnets are outlawed, and then providing the second clause as justification, or saying only magnets that affect electronics are outlawed. But either way I guess any team could claim their electronics were affected by your magnet. IIRC there's never been a magnetbot.

COPE from spinnerfags mad that the ref won't jump in and save their shitty design.

>posts video gaym pictures

You're all kinds of not welcome here.

I didn't just mean the picture quality (which I imagine has to do with the BBC having no incentive to improve when they get paid out of taxpayer money regardless), I just meant the overall aesthetic of the show. It was dark and grey, the area was covered in scratches and burns, the robots all looked cobbled together from scrap.
There was nothing clean or professional to it like the American counterpart.

t. never played anything competitive

I doubt anyone on Yea Forums has the knowledge or patience to built a competent combatbot

Knowledge is easily learned with time. Patience is just time. If I can rewind a 10hr film because I had to piss and forgot to pause, I can build a battlebot. Would I want to? No. I'm interested in watching shit. This isn't /diy/, nigger.

I wish there was a penetrating cattle gun design weapon, you could build the bot around it.

I always imagined taking part in this but I have a terminator robot who picks these up and tears them apart with her hands

forgotten kino right here

Nobody ever did a test on whether Atom was sentient, so for all they knew he was just a shitbot from an old meta where thick armour and power reserves still played well

Or maybe we're 20 years ahead... D-Didn't think of that, did ya?

Attached: 1491157476518.png (1142x1038, 331K)

I think it's saying they're effectively all outlawed, I mean any magnet powerful enough to be of any use would affect the electronics/rip the innards around and fuck up the electronics/however you choose to word it. I don't think it'd be cool to watch anyway.
Now untethered projectiles and flames, those would be cool to watch, but I imagine the restrictions have to do with safety concerns more than anything. Although on that note, I'd like to see more tethered projectiles because this would be a way to cheese your way out of the no entanglement rule.

There's a couple of obscure house robots, but Growler was the dog-one. Growler and Mr Psycho both did the last two original series and were brought in because they felt the House Robots were getting dabbed on by the stronger competitors.

The rules on this show were show strict that you could only really make spinners and flippers.

Flamethrowers would be a safety nightmare waiting to happen. It's pretty much inevitable that the system will break and start leaking propane everywhere. At least the house robots are heavily armoured and aren't supposed to be attacked anyway

>starts off with a rodeo and they want us to believe robot vs bull fights wouldn't be outlawed as fuck
Genuinely the most unbelievable part of the whole movie. It's taking bullfights and just making it a thousand times worse, because now there isn't a chance of the bull getting lucky and goring the matador up the ass. There's just no way it'd happen, especially not in America.

Attached: I ain't even mad.jpg (730x540, 375K)

I watched the american one a few years ago, whats the robot called that had multi directional wheels

that was cool, It was zipping everywhere

Attached: ooooo.jpg (540x568, 66K)

Who honestly cares? It’s meant to be entertainment.
I would mount a napalm thrower. Would stick and melt a lot better than propane.
Electrical current, guns or cattle guns, high powered drills and explosives would be fun. Would increase viewer count like crazy

There are a lot of engineers on Yea Forums.

Reminder that this isn't just a boys only zone

Attached: Battlebots Woman.webm (1254x720, 2.79M)

Hey, at least it was better than Miss Nightshade

It was actually a decent movie. Cheesy but the kid actor was good and son father relationship is always a solid theme.

Bullshit, Battlebots handles flamethrowers just fine. It's lazy producers not wanting to put any effort in. Cheaper to just outlaw every interesting weapon.

Real Steel was great, anyone who disagrees is either lying or was molested as a kid

or that one kid who made his blades out of paper

What season / show do I watch if I have not seen anything yet?

Don't you guys know that flamethrowers are allowed now? Besides, they never actually have any effect on the battle. It's pretty much just a visual thing.

Attached: Battlebots Witch Doctor.webm (1035x573, 1.91M)

Honestly, you can start anywhere. They're all good.

Whhaaaaa there was a young girl in it ' Pedbots Rage.

did she not test it or do any weight calculations or research on other contenders

Attached: 1549637620132.png (894x773, 48K)

You niggers all need to look into Survival Research Laboratories (SRL), the progenitor of all robot combat.
One of their designs was a V8 powered, dual wheel robot that fired 4x2 lumber at 60mph, another had a flamethrower made from a WW2 V2 rocket engine.

>why was an effective design not banned in a robot deathmatch-style gladiator competition?
Gee I dunno, OP.

>breaks your chain
Psh, nothin' personnell kid.

Would it actually be possible (with unlimited budget) to build a viable flame weapon? Oxyacetylene? Hydrogen? I'm guessing Battlebots uses butane.

Attached: E6E8412B-AA84-4BBB-B9D7-5699353A0662.gif (640x272, 3.07M)

I want thgem to keep increasing the weight limit untilo we have a full on Robot Jox situation

Correction, the Pitching Machine now throws 6” 2x4s at 200mphand has a range of 800 feet.

Attached: 43147221344_1321e1243c_o.jpg (1080x723, 158K)

They clamped down on the wedge flipper bots a few series in (some of them were getting seriously dangerous, capable of flinging bots above the barriers) but I'm not sure they ever outwardly did it for variety reasons.

The big problem was that the safety measures they mandated heavily restricted the weapons you could put on the bots and flippers were massively effective for little effort.

Why were they so scared? Did they actually hurt someone before?

I was always surprised how big these machines were

Yes, the flippers launched robots over the plexiglass and into the crowds

It became a very obvious risk.

100kg bits of metal with weaponry flying at the barriers is not a good situation.

Fucking kek

It's made all the better by their opponents looking like a pair of would-be nerd chads

I'm surprised no one has ever gone for a combination puncture and flame weapon. It seems like it would be incredibly effective since you only need one good puncture into the bot's case and it's a guaranteed kill. Sure it's maximum cruelty and would mean the other team's robot would never run again, but Tombstone has been doing that for years.

Holy fucking shit. What nightmarish contraptions have these people brought to life?

this is what ruins every game

>hobbies designed to be interesting for kids and adults is now just kids stuff
Nice. I bet you're going to say that scale models are kids stuff.

Nets and entanglements are banned because they're worse than flippers, boring as fuck and cheap. There's no defense against them. No matter what you do, if you've a bot with moving parts, you're at risk of entanglement.

Robot Wars would simple become a way of designing the most effective nets.

No wonder police use them

Attached: drone with net.jpg (750x563, 37K)

Probably because banning super effective stuff is easier than making up new rules to balance it. And since the show racks up enough views already, then why put in the extra effort.

FLYING BATTLEBOTS FUCKING WHEN?

Seriously, why not a napalm mixture?

They already have them in the new show but they are useless
>youtube.com/watch?v=UNk5-3fGNqI

Well obviously he'd be fucked against a giant flyswatter. This is the second video I've seen with fire as a weapon (which was banned in the older series). Is fire even effective against a robot? That drone exploded when its gas tanks were struck. Seems like a hazard.

Would allowing bots to have a some type of launcher that shoots a single round of something be feasible?

projectiles are not permitted by the rules

Quads have unidirectional flight.
Just dive back and to left and down.
Spin around and knock the tip of the rob
>NANI

.
Or have a grapper, grapthe net and flod it onto its own blades

Too fake

What if the entire robot was a projectile? Have a cheap grabber on the front and dedicate the rest of the weight allowance to the biggest rocket engine possible.

I'd forgotten how truly awful that show was

I'd say so, plenty arrogant enough to fit the bill.

They are both good bots, but the drivers for both teams are the best fucking heels I've ever seen.
I have never hated any heel as much as I hate them, they are fucking great.

its like a toxic battery fire LOL

What is the best bot in terms of design and ability to win?

Probably Razer. It's only real weakness are the wheels.

Experts are divided, but in my opinion any design that can create a lot of kinetic energy with one weapon (not splitting up weapon weight into two weapons or meme weapons) and can apply that energy to an opposing robot without getting hit by that robot's weapon has an advantage.

Considering only robots who are still in the tournament, I'd say that
Cobalt (moving extremely fast and deadly weapon)
Son of Whyachi (can't touch this without destroying yourself)
and Tombstone (similar to SoW)
are doing very good.
Minotaur (moving extremely fast and deadly weapon) is usually also very good but it's no longer in the tournament, because it was very unlucky when it touched an uneven part of the floor and damaged the drum.

That's so anticlimactic.

Realistically you can't stop the armadillo. So build that

Attached: Wrestling Armadillo.webm (236x178, 1.8M)

Anything that might disrupt the robot internals or the control signal is banned.

Too expensive for its own good. Fans of robot fighting want to watch things get fucked up.

They're too scared of something shooting into the crowd and killing someone since that would be the end of the show

Acetylene is without a doubt the absolutely worst possible thing to put on a battle bot. I'm not joking about that. If anything strikes the bottle it can trigger the C2H2 to decompose inside the bottle and the thing will literally explode. But it won't explode in the area, it'll just slowly build up heat and then explode without warning. Not to mention that you'll might have a serious explosion if either the O2 or C2H2 tanks are pierced during the fight.

I mean this bot would effectively be a giant shrapnel bomb waiting to go of during or after the fight.

making durable bots is expensive

Just name it jihad

>attach a speaker to your bot
>have it play the following prerecorded message
>"there is a bomb in this device"
>"attack me at your peril"

the reason they used a net in this fight was because there was no "no net" rule in the rulebook, or the wording was really vague.

I'm glad we've learned to call these Chads on their tee-ball "good sport when it suits me" ethics

based

It's so effective everyone watching would evacuate the building

You seen Quantum in the new Battlebots?
Very similar to Razer.
Same strengths
Same weaknesses
Can pierce through pretty much anything but fucking hell if its wheels aren't vulnerable to a decent spinner hit.

Fucking ABC are dabbing on me for not being American.

I'm sorry. If it makes you feel any better it's not a good video anyways

Why is anyone watching this if not to see robots flying around getting shredded

Do you watch boxing to see someone get killed or lose an eye?

Robots don't know what honor is.

>stealth Glau posting
nice

Robots =! People

>Euros don't know it's possible to watch TV for free in the US

I'm not surprised you missed the point. A civilised person watches for the skill displayed, the design, the tactics, not for barbarism.

People didn't really care about TV quality to the point where they had to aggressively advertise HD to make it seem desirable

I think your dog has autism

how long until we have people fighting these things?

We don't get anything of that when a robots immobile, how hard is it to comprehend that people want to see shit happen when it's possible

>that would be just like in the real world, when you fail in the free economy you just become a politician.
Forty-five.

>a race to the bottom
this always happens when profit motive makes producers pander to what the loudmouths claim people want

I believe it, those people are spergs.

the new battlebots makes you have an active weapon of some kind.

undisputed winner

>bot show has a "walker" contest
>its the mechanical equivalent of tards slapping eachother

every single time, why can't walker bot fights be interesting?

Like nunchuks?

Soon but just entangle it, stick a fork in it's wheel. The other ones just kick it hard enough so it can't right itself over
>youtube.com/watch?v=-7xvqQeoA8c

>tfw made a Ferrari once for my cub scout pinewood derby
I didn't win though, because kids cheat and have their dads make them for them.

Did your dad help you make it though?

Son of Wyatchi took advantage of that back in that day and made a barely mobile walker that had a ridiculous spinner due to the added weight limit for walkers.
It won on season but the rule was quickly removed.
Every other walker has been an absolute joke that only existed to get trashed.

user, we had people who thought that pinchers, ""flamethrowers""", drones, hammers were good ideas. No they didnt test shit

That's not even a robot. That's just two robots stuck together with a piece of 2x4.

if by pinchers you mean crushers, look at quantum, that thing is powerful. Also flamethrowers and drones are just for entertainment.

>those people
get out

But that would involve rational decision making based on facts, evidence and numbers, a skill that people with that hair color and big rimmed glasses usually don't have. And the decision would probably be racist towards less performing robots or ideas and all robot designs and ideas are equally powerful. Also, you're probably just a white cis male with an engineering degree so your opinion is invalid anyway.

If my math is right that's only about 1% of the energy that Tombstone's bar generates.

I've had that idea rattling around in my head for a while. My idea is a bot with a 3 pronged, articulated grasping claw to hold the enemy and draw them in. Once they're in range blast them with a captive bolt pistol with a sharpened, elongated bolt.

>sport that is so dangerous that the spectators have to be protected by an inch and a half of bulletproof glass
>kids stuff
explain that one to me

I always thought it was British

Does this still air? If so what channel?

well considering the UK last led the world in technology in the 40s, it makes sense that a more advanced nation would have more of an interest in robotics

Hypno-Disc: 20kg disc at 90mph
Tombstone: 34kg bar at 250mph

The very last season of Robot Wars allowed entanglement devices (probably specifically for Carbide) but I don't think they ever made a difference

Minotaur does weigh just under 250 lbs, it has a 70 lb drum that spins over 10,000 rpm which is incredibly powerful but also acts like armor

discovery, new episodes on fridays

>make flying battle bot
>design it after a cazador/tarantula hawk
>lands on enemy bots
>latches onto them
>penetrate hull with captive bolt pistol
>fries internals with flame weapon
>inserts "egg" into enemy bot
>egg is just a very sturdy, rapid expanding metal device
>egg snaps "open" tearing apart enemy bot from inside out

Thanks user

>make thread on American website
>WTF, why are there Americans here?!

I'll believe when I see it

She's one of the few people in the reboot that competed in the original series so even though she can't build great robots she still knows the sport really well

Obsessed
Go pay for your meme license

Remember that one old guy who made a robot out of wood and it got torn to peices?

Some places have started training eagles to do that

>design a bot that can burn or cut off the net

Anyone remembers this bullshit? How retards were hyped?

np, heres come of the recent episodes with everything cut but the fights
dailymotion.com/savvaloy/videos

Actually there's a robot in this season of Battlebots that uses projectiles (Double Jeopardy) but it hasn't had a televised fight yet. Not sure when the rules changed.

Quantum was built by the guys who built all the new house robots for the reboot of Robot Wars

why don't they use compressors and just impale the other bots with ridiculous force

I just want Robot Wars back, is that too much to ask?

RIP Bio-Hazard

One of the most boring things I have ever watched

This. Battlebots should allow guns.

If is the one I remember, it was more sad than anything else.

It has been tried several times but it's hard to aim and not as effective as just a massive hammer because you need to pin the other robot first otherwise it just pushes it away

>uhh yeah, my bot is a M2 browning on a an rc car chasis. somehow I've never lost.

>Humiliating opponent by further destroying their shitty bot

I really really like apollo, it has the aesthetics, it's not tiny and gay, it's a flipper but not some meme design that can't be beaten
and the flipper is so powerful oh god that piston

Brainlet, the other bots would then start having .50 machine guns too. The game would stop being about wedges and spinners and more about blasting each other to pieces with bullets and explosives. It would be awesome.

I know and they also won the first Chinese series but they seem t be outmatched these days purely because of the design. If they had a top-tier driver then they should do well but aside from the floor-destroying box rush they were completely outdriven but Lockjaw.
I think they'll get top 16 and become a fan-favourite like Beta did, but they aren't going all the way.
In terms of British bots, Cobalt may go all the way, with Monsoon doing a fine job.

Ray Billings estimated that Tombstone's blade hits 30x harder than a round from an AK-47, also it spins constantly and he doesn't have to aim it

Korea? Japan?

They should put omni wheels at the back like Razer, that's what made it so accurate

you watched too may bay films, also many of the spinners hit harder than bullets. Your plan removes the engineering aspect of the show and also the audience.

>claims he's not obsessed
>knows all the memes

Fuckin (((flippers)))

>Shoots huge metal ball bearings
This is pretty cool, but I still think they should be allowed to use real guns.

>Survival Research Labs
>Builds robots designed to kill people

Based. This show is like 90% filler.

The new design can shoot multiple times I believe

I thought it got brought back recently.

It did but it only lasted like 3 or 4 seasons

>blasting each other to pieces with bullets and explosives
>It would be awesome
the absolute state of americans

Shatter did show how good omni-wheels are last episode.
I only hope Quantum gets a few good fights next as such a unique but powerful bot deserves a good showcase.
Battlebots get pretty sickening with their obsession with 'box with vertical spinner' as Robot Wars di with ''flipper wedge' along with the old seasons 'box pusher' of the much hated Tornado and Storm 2.

some of the filler is pretty cool, like the pit segments and weapon tests. The amount of commercials is what sucks.

Might be cool

Sounds kino
