If you watch high-brow comedies in a foreign language, you'll notice that, unless you are very proficient in the language, a lot of the comedy is lost on you. The humorous subtleties of word and pronunciation are unlocked only by the native speaker.
But slapstick? Slapstick is the one universal in comedy. It is funny in any time or place. A tribe in the Amazon will understand slapstick in the same way that a suburban housewife will. That is not to say that it isn't subtle. Slapstick can be crafted and honed the same as a good linguistic gag, but it never locks out the spectator. It is within the human soul to grasp the joy of slapstick, regardless of how it is dressed up.
Slapstick is the unity of mankind. It is beauty. It doesn't just reach across language, it reaches across race and culture. It is the joy in all of us. It plays with all of our souls in the same way. It elicits the same chemical reactions in all of our bodies and minds, no matter your colour or creed.
