Season 3: Here you have the wtf giant threat appear from the upside down. It has a plot that has been developing and there is a plan. Some cool lovecraftian shit. Have season 3 end with an invasion or something large.

The problem with this show is that every season is the same stupid story reset. Some mindless animal finds out about the real world wants to escape into it with no real intelligence. we never really delve into the upside down again like we did in season 1 and all the experiments with other kids, which is interesting, doesnt get developed. Maybe it was because of the shitty indian girl episode? There is no real plan for the series, which is so killer because the first season had so much potential. It's all just nostalgia bait. Reminds me of the first season of Kora and how the show dropped the ball. Raise the stakes every season, the season 2 ending was too soon.

The Silent Hill color scheme, the ability to just keep a demogorgon like it isn't a huge deal, the fact that Hopper probably did end up there by using the portal, and the amount of time it took them to keep beaming their gate — beaming for that long compared to the first opening and not creating accidental other gates (the demogorgon tree), their target was probably very specific. The groups slowly discover more and more before their paths converge and they realize it's all connected, then Hopper leads the way guns blazing with Joy and El at his side, El uses her powers to the point of putting her near the brink of death, the day is saved, the end. Change very minor aspects and add a crappy character or two into one of the aforementioned groups and you have 3 whole seasons.

The problem with this theory is that you're forgetting that the air in the Upside Down is supposed to be toxic. Will was in there less than a week in season 1 and you could already see that it was taking a toll on him. From what I gathered the Russians had been attempting to open a portal to another world for a few years at that point and while by the point at the beginning to season 3 they could crack the portal open they couldn't really open it or sustain it.
They went to Hawkins because a portal has successfully been opened there and even though it was now closed it would still be a helluva lot easier to open than all the other potential portal sites they knew about.

Eleven is too trusting and naive for the advice Max was giving her. Like Mike was too clingy but El was just doing what Max told her to do, Max was being way more controlling than Mike had ever been even if she didn't mean to be. Season 2 ramped up too much so that season 3 didn't raise the stakes enough to be interesting. The S3 Mind Flayer was just a big Demogorgon, not the Eldritch horror it was in S2. Season 1 was good, but it was carried hard by the interesting concept and 80s nostalgia. Season 2 was the wrong direction. Season 3 was a leap backwards. The franchise is ruined and there is no hope for the next season being good.
