I'm going to say it - Billy was obviously written as a closeted gay character last season, but they chickened out on following through with it because the actor was homophobic and wasn't comfortable playing a gay character.

This directly led to the whole Robin fake-out, which was super lame and basically tokenism. It was absolutely random, and its only served to shit on Steve more.

There was so many hints that Billy's anger came from the fact that he was closeted, and it would have been a great way to really subvert and redeem the 80's teen movie villain trope he was based upon. There's no way that it wasn't intentionally written that way.

After the season aired, there were a bunch of interviews with the actor where they asked him "do you think Billy is gay?" and he reacted really negatively towards the idea and was a real asshole when asked about it.

As a result, I think they were forced to scrap the plotline.

Also they were going to have him be way more racist towards Lucas, but scrapped that as well.
