A female Mask could work. The thing with the Mask is that anyone could wear it. People saying "but there's no good female comedians" kind of forget that Jim Carrey wasn't a great comedian. I've only read the first volume and it's basically a gorefest of the Mask wearers (called Big Head in the comics) going insane and killing everyone that gets in their way and people they held grudges against. Making that plot into a movie would just be edgy imho, and I can understand why they went with the light-hearted Carrey version. But don't get me wrong, the comic is pretty good, though I haven't checked out The Mask Returns and the third volume whose title I can't remember right now

The Mask in the comics was darker than the films.

In the comics, Stanley himself was an insane killer after wearing the Mask. The movie vastly toned it down, it was like taking Freddy Krueger and turning him to Bugs Bunny.
