It was going to end on cliffhanger regardless, given the length of the manga. I wouldn't have objected to the ending being more drawn out, but I thought they stopped at a good place to set up a potential sequel. Overall the movie was way better than I expected.

When I was watching the movie I thought it was a super slow movie.
Maybe because I had seen Gunnm in the past.

My friends thought the opposite though, they thought the story felt rushed.

It's not that it felt rushed, it feels like an incomplete story. It feels like three stories forced into one movie and then the credits roll about halfway through the third act.

I mean I get it, they've got a shitload of material prepared and Cameron probably wanted the entire original run of Gunnm to be wrapped up within a film trilogy, but the plot of Alita just moves at such a breakneck speed that when I re-watched it I noticed I'd missed a lot of things on my first showing. I wonder if I'll notice something else I've missed when I watch the Blu-Ray version.

There are so many better ways the film could have ended: Alita could have killed someone who actually mattered. The story could have used a fight with Grewishka or Zapan to end the first movie, but instead they just unceremoniously disappear from the story.

We could have actually seen Alita climb the ranks in Roller Ball-- we don't actually see her win any games in the film, she just becomes a contender, so the film has no triumph. And I know doing this would have completely refocused the entire story, but imagine Gladiator where we only see Russel Crowe in one fight and he doesn't even finish it.

Or the film could have built up to the death on the transit tether. What should have been the emotional core of the film was treated like an afterthought. It could have been fixed with just a little scene of the guy being motivated to climb it, and Alita actually searing for him-- but no, no motivation, and Alita instantly knows where he is because we need to wrap this shit up now. Who cares if it doesn't make sense, the plot requires this to happen so its happening now.

Her motivation is to get to Zalem and kill Nova because he killed Hugo and the only way to get to Zalem (that she's aware of) is by becoming the Motorball champion

I think the actor playing McTeague just has a minor head shake/twitch thing going on, my dad has that now that he has gotten older

Cameron wrote 180 pages of script and 1000 pages of notes, executive produced it, made concept art back in 2005 for it and also had his art team at Lightstorm do the new concept art. Cameron did everything he could have possibly done while also making a sequel to the highest grossing movie ever made for Disney.
Rodriguez even said he set out to direct it like it was a Cameron movie.

Well most of that list is 3+ sequels, more if you include shared universe junk. The only really real surprise on the list is maybe Rocketman because trends were pushing way more of those biopics. Godzilla movies never do great. 1998 godzilla might have been pre-china marketing. Still no surprise. Steven King adaptations maybe but a remake? Questionable.
