Your cells are designed to deal with radiation constantly. The main source of energy we have for all organisms is constantly damaging our DNA. So it's a random chance. Some people get lucky, and their bodies either repair or kill the effected cells. Others die from low doses because they just get that one really shitty mutation.

Cancer comes from cells that forget to be team players by forgetting to die. Radiation burns/sickness comes from your cells just all dying.

Dragging those heavy boats was a massive mistake, slowed them down to a snails pace and they had hundreds of miles to cover. I'd have instantly abandoned all non-necessities, just give each man a bag with as much food in it as possible and walk.

I suppose the problem is what if the ice had melted to the south of King William's Island. Without the boats, they'd have to wait till Winter or a rescue mission they knew wasn't coming to either walk across to mainland Canada or to be picked up. With the boats at least they could row across.
