Really loved the pacing in Season 1. Disliked Season 2 a lot. I gotta say. I feel like the villain(s) are kinda all over the place and it all felt sort of scatterbrained watching it. I'm four episodes in but the writing seems really bad compared to both the previous seasons

Hopper's character is now a fat, drunk deadbeat dad stereotype who is also somehow capable of dragging the corrupt "literally who" mayor off to his mansion without anyone raising an eyebrow. The side-plot with Steve and la creatura is awful, and they're literally using a conveniently knowledgeable in four languages bitch and sassy black really young child to sidestep generic military Russians with guns. It's halfway through the season and yet the show hasn't really veered from the light-hearted comedic pacing you'd expect from the first 1-2 episodes. The "horror" as it stands, feels in itself like a side plot. The other kids don't seem to have a real "plot" of their own, only dull teenage drama that no one cares about.

All in all, it's shit, I hope it gets better but I'm not expecting it to.

Conspiracy theories aside there are more issues like this and it really doesn't have to do with Max's gender and everything to do with the number of main characters. And they added two more this season who will surely stick around in the future. It's a crowded cast and it's too much for any writer to reasonably handle. For example once Nancy and Johnathan join with Mike's group they start to fight one another for screentime and focus. Will especially drifts into the background at that point and none of his plotshit is resolved. Trying to act more grown up, his jealousy towards the girls (Which is the third time that plot has been done anyway. Lucas in season 1, Mike in season 2, and now Will in season 3).

No one is being given their due and it leaves their plots all muddled and unrefined. Mike and Eleven awkwardly shuffle back and forth between being okay with one another and being uncomfortable, Max's relationship with Eleven stops getting focus at all and she mostly spends time screaming at Lucas and Mike for whatever fucking reason while disregarding how dangerous shit is for Eleven with no kickback. Her relationship with her brother is also very halfassed. Johnathan's relationship with Will is non-existent and they don't even speak to one another despite being in the same room, and just loads of shit like that and Johnathan really spends most of the back half of the season just standing there or running around with a pity line here or there.

They need to cull the cast but instead they keep growing it. There's too many players on the field for a concept this simple and they can not balance them for shit.

They have the bulk of screentime though. They just spend it doing nothing of note. Hopper and Joyce's plot was especially unnecessary too since Dustin was already doing that plot. Moving Will over to Dustin's plot over promoting Erica would have also been better too since they were the two having problems with the group dynamic's shift, he's already a main character, Erica is pretty much no smaller than Dustin and there was only one vent that needed her anyway, and since Eleven and Nancy were already investigating the Mind Flayer shit his sixth sense wasn't really necessary at all because two characters were already looking into this before him and his sense never matters.

It's just a muddled mess. It comes across as entirely rushed and poorly thought out. And that's before you get into the fact that the entire season serves as an introductory to Russia for season 4, that it didn't touch on the Upside Down at all, that it didn't add any more details about Eleven's siblings or past or where the doctor is, none of the established lore or organizations are built on, and worst of all that a gate open in Russia as the post-credit scene shows should have meant the Mind Flayer wouldn't have died off. It's pretty much a filler season in a show that shouldn't need one.
