The script was being written while they filmed. It's the same story as the Hobbit in a lot of ways. They were making up scenes on the fly while the director tried to plot his next move.

Funny thing was Sandman was going to be the Doc Ock of the third film aka the only important villain in the movie, but due to studio interference and Sony/Marvel wanting to sell toys, they forced Venom in.

I remember seeing it when it came out as a kid. It was the first movie to disappoint me in the theatre. I recently rewatched it and thought it was ok. It's more corny and silly than its predecessors, but not by that much. It had a hard time balancing its three villains.

I watched it for the first time in a while about a couple years ago, and I'm.. inclined to agree. It has weak segments and the ending is rushed, but there's a lot of personality still present in it.
