It'd be a very grey ending, yet would drive a lot of positive question, whereas the one we got is just people complaining about plot holes and unanswered questions about Bran the Broken. Dany was the only one that could bring all 7 kingdoms under one ruler again, even if it meant becoming like Aegon come again.
You might say hurr Jon should be king, but he was way dumb in season 8 for it to be believable, while Dany would've survived several betrayals in season 8 alone, making her the more hardened and ruthless ruler by the time she's crowned, befitting of the Iron Throne.

She starts off as idealistic and ends up as the same sort of authoritarian monarch who thinks she knows what is right for everyone that she always feared becoming. We go full circle with the second Sack of King's Landing and an uneasy alliance between the Starks and Targs tied together by a complicated relationship. We even get Jon as Ned: "Wtf Dany! Rape and murder is not cool!" with Dany as Robert: "That's how war is, honorcuck. I'LL KILL EVERY LIONSPAWN I GET MY HANDS ON." We get a new monarch and promises of change, but are things really that much better? In twenty years who knows how sane she'll be. It doesn't seem very Martinesque to have things actually end positively with benevolent omniscient tree god on the throne. Aragorn on the throne is bad, things can't always end happily ever after! There just make Aragorn omniscient it's perfect. Literally happy ending for everyone besides Dany and maybe Jon.

The show cuts a bunch of characters including Harrold/Harry the Heir, Griff and young Griff, Val, etc.
Arya's renouncement of revenge didn't make sense because I'm sure in the books will have to do with her confrontation with Lady Stoneheart who is the one murdering the Freyrs and enemies of her family who is Avenger Darth Catelyn she'll be introduced to warn Arya about what happens if she goes that direction.

Jon's currently grieving Ygritte, so he won't move on but still feels attracted to Val. There were other examples of wordings that Martin loves to use for endgame, but is more like teasing to the readers for now.

Letting the lannisters build up such a presence in the first place is unrealistic.
