Being brutally honest, even to the point of personal inconvenience, forces your words to be lockstep with your actions and abilities. Usually compulsive liars and manipulators come from a position of weakness, of shame or dissatisfaction with the self. The benefits of being a person of integrity may not be as immediate or transparent as that of the manipulator, but it leads to so much more trust and self-worth in the long run.
Also as was alluding to, people have evolved as highly social animals with an extremely acute eye for social and emotional cues. You can force your mouth to say anything but your eyes and posture will always show a form of sincerity that most people perceive at an instinctive level.
I guarantee the people who go around trying to game people into their own hands are not as clever as they think they are and usually end up far more isolated and powerless than they could ever imagine.
