See this is part of what I loved about Power Rangers. It had something for everyone. As a kid I thought the US shield was because those scenes required more "moving" and the others didn't so they used the other one. I never thought about how most of the japanese morph fights had the shield and are far more "intense" than the US ones but of course at the time I had no idea the show used japanese footage. As a kid I was always obsessed with continuity and the explanation I used was that the green ranger was losing power and when he lost more power his shield became the "weak" version. I still like that theory to this day.
