if you've paid any attention though, Alita has been playing yoyo with Captain Marvel for awhile, Alita often topping it, it's amazing it can even keep up with a billion dollar plus movie
what's more, Captain Marvel is released and Alita is not, it's going to shoot right back up once it is released in digital and once the blu-ray actually releases
plus Marvel is especially strong right now with the new meme spider-man sequel #9040390832712

That's what I thought. Its more of a song to end an introduction then a complete work. James has it all in the bag. He knew A:BA would be a slow seller out of the gate. He has a long term plan in mind though. Hopefully not too long till the sequel though.

it can easily make the difference between a sequel and no sequel, happens for a lot of movies
especially a movie like Alita that didn't have a massive head start like anything Marvel
takes more time to build a fanbase

In this case it’s the difference between a bad flop and a slightly less bad flop. There’s never going to be a sequel because all that happened with this franchise is it managed to pull a fanbase or a similar size to most animes’, only for 100-300 times the cost to make an anime.

James made so much money from Titanic and Avatar, and probably T2 and the sequels where he gets free money for doing next to nothing, he can say fuck you and make whatever he wants at this point. also the character designs (especially Alita which was reworked until they got it right), the CG landscapes like the motorball stadiums are things that can be reused
I feel like they could do a sequel with a lesser budget and still maintain the same production quality because so much is done already and can be reused
