Why is Ralph Macchio's acting so fucking bad? He has worked consistently since 1980, not like he's out of practice or something.
My biggest complaints are the nonsensical scenes. In season 2, everyone just starts fighting in school and it's screams "This is a movie"
It just lacks any sort of grounding. The Karate kid was pretty grounded. Daniel got his ass beat by kids that took karate, until he trained enough to beat him at a tournament. In cobra Kai, kids are just casually having fights that looks clearly rehearsed.
The show is pretty quick and dirty in general like recent Clint Eastwood movies. Everything scene feels like an elevator pitch.
Yea Forums's selling point to me was that this is the closest we'll ever get to a live-action Shonen in Western media.

Nothing The Karate Kid did was particularly special or innovative at the time (even for its time it was painfully predictable) beyond the universally lovable story and heart which Cobra Kai manages to also deliver. I'd even argue Cobra Kai's lightly meta approach to capturing the heart of Karate Kid makes it marginally more interesting than the original Karate Kid itself.
