Why did Ghostbusters and MiB fail to launch competent franchises despite having really good ideas for franchise possibilities?

It's weird that the animated spin off versions were actually decent (for Saturday morning toons)
So it's possible to come up with storylines for the franch

Franch is what us Hollywood insiders call franchises

no way, thats fucking retarded

>remake the first movie, but make it unfunny and star women instead
>good idea

I honestly think MiB overachieved. Niche comic, big first movie with two sequels that did well and a kickass animated show with probably the best intro in american cartoons.

I find amazing how the edgy toon had a diverse cast paralytic, spaniard , female. And it was widely accepted. Why did they went for the propaganda reboot?

The goth makes my dick hyper hard

The real villain here are the executing producers who are literally grave robbing actor likenesses to take advantage of muh nostalgia.

This. I don't understand why people claim the 90's and 2000's were not diverse. Entertainment in the 2010's seems ironically racist and sexist because of how condescending it is.

I don't think the edgy cartoon would've been well received if it were released as a movie today, assuming the cartoon wasn't released back then.
The cartoon had success not only because it was good, but also because it was aimed at a smaller target audience.

Ghostbusters 3 will be called Ghostbusters 2020. It will have the original cast set to return and Paul Rudd as a main character.

Bustin'

uh, no? The first 3 generated a lot of money. Specifically the first one was almost a meme how much merch they had in the 90's.

>fail to launch competent franchises
One solid movie is not a good franchise.

Ghostbusters concept really only works for a single movie, trying to make it a franchise is just a stupid, greedy idea.

>So somehow you've made it "more diverse" by cutting out white males? You may want to think about that again. Oh I see, to you "diverse" means "elimination of all white males" oh well then... bravo.

I thought it was really fucking simple you make a Ghostbusters franchise in the movies. Especially now but even better a few years ago. The original team holds this small but still famous business based in New York But Peter get's the idea to open franchises to rake in more money. Just a really rushed obvious bad idea cash grab. And just draw parallels with what they're doing and what you think more than likely went on behind the scenes of making a "reboot" movie.

because they are boring just like star wars give up manchild and read/watch something good

Alt-Right, SJW Left political bullshit had nothing to do with either failures. It absolutely just comes down to the people who took over the franchises not understanding anything about why the originals worked. This is why you can't bring people in who have disdain for the original franchises. The same thing happened with Star Wars.

In the case of both Ghostbusters and Men in Black, the "magic" of those movies is in taking something completely supernatural/paranormal, something wondrous and magical and presenting them in a way that is utterly and completely mundane. It's why comedy duos tend to work best with a straight man.

Just think for a fucking second about what Ghostbusters IS. It was envisioned after The Exorcist, an intense supernatural horror movie predicated upon spiritualism and faith, and it's serious to an absolute fault. Ramis look at that and thought, "Would it be funny if it was just some regular Joe's dealing with ghosts like they were cockroaches? Just some scruffy guy from Brooklyn with a big tube of 'ghost spray' on his back." THAT'S what makes it so magical.

Men in Black does the same fucking thing. It's about ALIENS and END OF THE WORLD shit, and it treats it as if it's the most boring job in the world. MiB is run like the fucking IRS. Just a bunch of government Joe's filling out forms and utterly bored by the monotony of the thousandth alien incursion. Kay is the blank-faced G-man utterly bored with genuine MAGIC, and Jay's response to the absolute insanity of that connects him with the audience. That's why they work so well together, and that's why the later movies don't have the same magic.

tl;dr The people in charge don't know shit. So...typical Hollywood.

Finn Wolfhard, McKenna Grace and Paul Rudd are in it

cont

I mean for FUCKS SAKE they named the movie GHOSTBUSTERS! That's the most mundane pest control name possible. It's so boring it's perfect! But nobody actually thinks about that anymore because it's become a brand, something thoughtless that represents something in itself. So they don't unpack the name and THINK about it. The entire thesis of the movie is in that name.

The perfect storm of talent wasn't really there the 2nd time + around
Scripts probably rushed as well

There's no way GB2016 would be remembered if it wasn't for the director and the actors complete fucking meltdown over anyone who criticized them. They had a fit equal to a thousand Brie Larsons going supernova at once.

Because they were character driven comedy-dramas that were carried by performances of actors, at the height of their power, the remakes thought the draw was the situation or effects.
Either you're going to heavily involve the original cast or people just won't want to see it, men in black without will smith is just a generic alien comedy, etc.
