Too Old to Die Young discussion

So I recently just finshed the new series Too Old To Die Young and I absolutely adore it. Refn is one of my favorite directors, so to get so much new material from him all at once was pretty insane. Overall I think its one of the most cinematic and best season of television I've ever seen. But one thing about it just doesn't really sit right with me. SPOILER ALERT!!!!!! Okay, so now that I have it all finished theres one thing that really annoys me, and it's def my biggest complaint about its story. Why on earth would they kill off Martin and Janey so unceremoniously and swiftly like that, while there was still two more episodes left to go? I just think that was such a big mistake. I can appreciate how brutal and true to life it was, people don't always get saved, it kind of reminded me of No Country for Old Men in that sense, but apart from that, I think it was just done to subvert expectations. It's just Martin was totally the center of the show, and his character arc was extremely interesting. Watching him transform from a corrupt low level goon to actually having a moral compass and trying to direct his energy towards good was extremely powerful storytelling. And then he just gets fucking killed. End of the main character, only gets referenced once again in the series. I think all of the other characters are great and pretty well fleshed out, but without Martin at the center of them all I just think the balance is off. What did you guys think about this? Disclaimer: I still really like episode 9 a lot, and the scene with Viggo in the trailer park is one of the best moments of the series and I feel is the true finale of the show. I thought that was amazing. However episode 10 is prob my least favorite of all of them. I get what it's doing, just focusing on Jena Malone and Yaritza, showing two rising feminine forces, I totally get it. But instead of a ten minute scene of Jena masturbating maybe they should have ended a scene giving Jesus's character some closure?

It's actually a really good scene. Just kind of a puzzling one to put near the end of the series. May have been exaggerating about it being ten minutes

I think you made a mistake in assuming Martin was the protagonist. The show was an ensemble piece from the very beginning and Martin's plotline was just one of many. Also, his death did something with the aliens Malone was somehow in contact with.

I feel like that's pretty true, although the marketing and everything kind of leads me to believe Martin was always the center of the story. He was just who I connected with the most and had more of an arc than anyone else in the cast. I think they show did a really great job of fleshing out Jesus and Yaritza, but at the end of the day Jesus is just a cartel goon obsessed with power and his mother. Yaritza is super interesting though, I'm pretty interested in her character

I do love episode 2

I still have to watch it. I loved Only God Forgives but that's about 2 hours long, I don't know if I can handle Refn's usual pace through many hour long episodes. I mean it's good but it gets old and boring fast.

Shut up! I'm not insulting the series, I love it, haha. I'm just upset that it didn't go my way basically, which isn't a super valid criticism. I still think it's one of the greatest things I've seen.

If you like Only God Forgives you should actually really love this. The writing in Too Old To Die Young is way more substantial. So although it still has the long silences and glacial pans, it actually feels like it's working in service of the story and characters.

what was his problem?

Sounds like trendy nihilism for people who never grew out of being Nine Inch Nails fans.

He's a megalomaniac speed freak obsessed with his daughter, reminded me of a certain somebody

>orange man bad

whhaaaaaaaa, no idea what you're talking about sir

This guy gets it

Youre such a gay kid lol

Really good take

30 minute finale episode was a disaster, truly. I enjoyed where it was building to but it felt like things stumbled at the climax. Yeah the masturbating scene was only a few minutes but then it follows up with Jena sitting by a pool doing nothing, dancing around and monologuing to ""nobody"". Then the Yaritza end with that long ass song and dragging out the "I'm the angel of death" shit again like yes, no shit you are. It didn't feel like the capstone to a big story. Only thing I think Refn did wrong with this show.

Yeah I totally agree with you. These scenes would have worked earlier in the season but they don't really serve any proper closure. The Yaritza scene drags on for a bit too long and kind of just reestablishes whats already been shown
