Yeah it definitely needs some serious balance tweaks. Card mod makes it so easy to break, but it almost feels like the junction system is built around it. Modding out items then refining magic from them.

Laguna's story is better than Squall's. It has actual tragedy where his wife died while he's saving the little girl that's become a daughter to them. Squall's some bitch ass punk who literally can't even remember why he's such a sad sack of shit

1) when Rinoa casts a spell on him
2) when he thinks Seifer (the only person he understands/relates to) dies

What is Terra then? Shes kinda unique, more of vehicle for the plot and the esper concept. Really, ff6 didnt have a main charater, every character had their own story and their own conflict with the empire to overcome. Still my fav i think.
