If I remember right, Gandalf was concerned about Smaug joining Sauron and burning Rivendell. But that may have just been him covering his bases. Smaug was arrogant enough and maybe powerful enough to have told Sauron to fuck off.

I'm watching the extended Hobbit trilogy right now an I gotta say, the first one is almost LoTR tier. 2 isn't BAD, but it's pathetically bloated. The Smaug and Gandalf stuff keeps your interest, but Kili and Tauriel need to die.
The Extended cuts are better, btw.
