Insane bio-nanotech. I kind of got the sense that the black goop was supposed to be more than just an energy source, and more like the black goo from Prometheus, like some sort of engineered biological substance that works like ATP for their machinery while also being able to repair their physiology, etc, and it meant that when Wickus got sprayed with it, it tried repairing his physiology into the form of a prawn, because that's what the nano-goo naturally defaulted to.

Ah, that makes sense. I wish they made a sequel. Still to this day. One of the best cgi I've seen in film.

The black goo was two things at once. Like a USB stick can have a file on it, the black goo canister was the means the Prawns use to propagate themselves. If they're upper caste was not nearly all killed in whatever caused their ship to be stranded above South Africa, they would have done their standard procedure. They would have collected humans and turned them into bugs because that is their slave caste. Like worker bees. But it's easier to populate an entire planet with workers if the planet already has inhabitants at a sufficient number. Think of all the strip-mining they could do if they converted the whole population into easily controller drone workers.

With the leader caste dead or otherwise gone, the ship and its inhabitants fell into disrepair. The Prawns were so easy to corral into shanties and concentration camps because they're literally barely-sentient worker drones.

CJ was of a higher caste and he just needed the black stuff to fix his escape pod. He no doubt did not care that it was also a "change aliens into us" canister, because that wasn't his plan. He was going to use whatever it was, devoid of its programmed property because he was smart enough to do it.

When Wikipedia was infected, we saw first-hand what would have happened globally if the Prawn leader caste weren't dead or otherwise indisposed.

In all likelihood if CJ ever came back it would not be to save Wikipedia.
