Same here. He has what looks like it could be an actual arc. He's basically been a complete failure throughout the last two films. I'm actually kind of interested in whether or not he might actually succeed (be that in a redemptive sense, or simply if he can actually become the evil bignig he has the potential to be).

If they'd done it right that would be obvious and true. As it is they tried to make it a dual-protagonist story, but the giving Rey primary positioning, which was dumb because she's a weaker character and as of now her only merit is in relation to her secondary

You can't have a character's only suffering occur off-screen before the story even starts. She doesn't even reflect in in-story. We're just supposed assume suffering and adversity we never see.

Finn was slightly better in TFA but dropped massively in TLJ.

Did you watch TFA? We specifically see her thinking about how she was abandoned in a flashback and presumably how sad she is about it, we see her fending off another junker trying to steal BB-8, and we see her getting the shit end of a deal with the junk-trader ripping her off while there's nothing she can do about it. Of course as soon as they get onto the Millenium Falcon she kicks the Mary Sueness up to 11, but let's not ignore that at least in the beginning she was facing adversity user.

The problem with Finn is that his character premise is that he's an ex-stormtrooper and yet they do nothing with it. At no point do we see him struggling with his stormtrooper programming, at no point do we see him conflicted about fighting his old comrades, absolutely nothing.
