Wattoo always seemed funny to me, don't really know why.

ever heard of the petrodollah?

Hutts owned Tattooine's economy. The Republic was powerless there.

Tatooine is not part of the Republic.

>what are exchanges

>why were Republic credits useless?
Star Wars might be too complicated for you. Maybe stick with children's cartoons from now on.

It’s an outer rim planet that doesn’t recognize the republic.

That's like saying America isn't part of the EU so euros are worthless there. If you lived in America and someone offered you a million euro would you refuse? If course not because currency can he exchanged.

"What are exchanges?" -Jabba the Hutt

He was just being a Jew

Watto only uses bitcoin.

Star Wars is basically a children's cartoon, that's why the worldbuilding is shit and makes no sense.

Qui Gon only had pocket change. If a much more substantial sum was presented, then he'd change his mind.

America is in a different star system than Europe, dummy.

>Jew refusing money
Qui gon was the Jew because he cheated at dice and tried to use mind control on watto, fucking forceniggers.

Lmao okay user, remember that Tatooine is a bit farther from the Republic than the U.S. and Europe are, also are you sure that some backwater shitty civilization on some shitty backwater planet's going to have an exchange capable of reimbursing Qui-Gon with enough valuable goods to afford a fucking Hyperdrive? Not just a hyperdrive but a special Nubian one, and are you implying that that guy running the exchange not only has the goods to swap for the Republic's shitty worthless money but that he'd be WILLING TO when there's a giant race coming up that he'd probably have put a fuckton of his goods into betting on, since you have to remember that he'd have to leave Tatooine and travel to a Republic planet just to make any sort of money on the trade with Qui-Gon, and are you dumb enough to think he'd do that on the eve of a potentially insanely lucrative event?

And that's just implying he even exists in the shitty no good sand settlement.

Hyperspace means that countries are basically analogous to star systems so the analogy holds up.

distance and lack of infrastructure means access to republic services is so slim that their currency becomes less valuable to the local population.

Watto can't use them to buy anything he needs, and likely doesn't know anyone who'd give him more than pennies on the dollar for them.

>Tatooine is a bit farther from the Republic than the U.S. and Europe
Distances like that mean nothing in the star wars universe because it's been demonstrated that you can jump from planet to planet within hours. Also you can have a full on holographic conference call in real time do obviously it's possible to transfer data easily (ie electronic currency). You're telling me that spacefaring civilizations with hyperdrive never figured out how to wire money? That's just bad worldbuilding.

So what?Muslim caliphates were powerless in medieval scandinavia, but their money was still used there

The most probable reason is that credits were useless funny money.

They probably weren't. I think it's more likely that Wattoo was written as a shrewd opportunist, and recognized that he might be able to get more from his strange guests, who wanted parts to a very pricy and exclusive class of ship, if he refused to take direct payment of credits.

To draw a paralell metaphor, imagine you're running salvage repair in a small town in the middle of nowhere, and a very clean, well dressed (ie looking civilized and not like criminal scum or dust covered moisture farmers), educated person presents himself asking for parts for a Mazarati, Bently, or Ferrari.

That's just one theory though. They might have been worthless for another reason; it's not legal tender where he lives, and he's not planning on taking any trips to republic space; and if he tried to spend them on Tatooine, he'd have them priced at a severe discount, meaning that he'd lose money on them, likely to someone who would get full price once for them in Republic space.

It was fiat currency issued by the galactic federal reserve.
Watto knew all about the plans of the Sith World Order, so he decided to do the smart thing and established a gold and silver based portfolio instead.

He didn't want to pay taxes and was laundering money. Why do you think some businesses are cash only?
