It's a pretty typical story about a young boy learning to accept the responsibility of being a man. The really interesting trick to it, though, is that it's wrapped in a package that is a bait and switch for the audience that most needs that kind of message: otakus, NEETs, and the like. It starts off as just cool fighting robots and waifus but then slaps them in the face with the "stop being a pussy and actually do something with your life" message. It creates this interesting paradox where the people who most virulently hate it are its target audience.

I like the series but only the comfy parts.

But otaku are doing something with their lives. Anno was an otaku and he made one of the most influential anime of all time.

Wrong. Completely wrong. Yes, Anno wanted to troll his fans with EoE, but it is not different thematically from NGE.

In fact, EOE is literally meant to be complementary to the final two episodes of NGE, which is why the title cards are 25' and 26'. While Third Impact/Instrumentality occurs in the real world and Tangs everybody's consciousness into one super-organism during EOE, NGE's last two episodes occur in Shinji's mind as this occurs, which causes him to initially accept and later come to reject Instrumentality.

His nonacceptance of Aska and the purple hair chick further shows this.
At the end of the day apparently there were a dozen endings planned so we just got two of them. I dont mind multiple endings but I enjoy the series one more

Earth is seeded by one lifeform, Angels with the Adam host.
The Lilith host also lands on Earth, and she hosts the Lilin (Human) lifeform.

They clash, Angels are subdued by the superior human race, and time passes. Lilith is dormant, Adam is subdued and also dormant.

SEELE is an ancient human organization, practically the illuminati jewry. They literally start world war 3 and assume control as the new world order in it's aftermath. They now start to artificially evolve themselves into Gods, having access to the ancient alien artifacts that allow them to do so. They have found Adam and Lilith.

Rei Ayanami is in reality Lilith, the host and goddess of mankind in a way, who is suppressed and inserted into the body of a human being. She meets Shinji, who is the protagonist, and the focal point of the show. The story has this rich background whilst being all about defining the human condition and it's need to be social, despite the pains it brings. It's also a warning against escapism, particularly among otaku.

Shinji is a frightened, cowardly boy who is afraid to connect with others, yet feels the need to be loved. He connects with Rei Ayanami, and they bond deeply. Through this bond, in the finale, they are able to reconnect in the midst of the apocalypse and essentially foil SEELE's plan to destroy mankind as we know it by reducing it to a single organism.

It's pretty clearly there to wrap up the final themes of the show. After what's presumably a fair bit of time alone, judging by the graves he's constructed and whatnot, Asuka arrives. Shinji, in typical fashion, rejects her. He's still scared of interacting with others. The hedgehog's dilemma. In his trauma, he attempts to strangle her, push humanity away, isolate himself. Despite this violence, Asuka caresses his face. It's a summation of the show's central message - in spite of the pain and suffering people cause to one another, humanity is still worth something, there is still good in interacting with others. A very stripped down version of episodes 25 and 26 if you will. It's that caress, and the realization (subconscious or not) that makes Shinji break down.

The final line spoken by Asuka is ambiguous, but I've always taken it as her calling Shinji out for trying to strangle her, for crying, for breaking down, for being the same person he was throughout the show. They're still the same people. They have a lot to work through.

I do quite like that the "cover" of the movie is what takes place immediately after the ending, though - the two of them on the beach, together.

the show is about existence/god/consciousness. the universe is infinite and has cyclical elements. if consciousness is one, then it has nothing to compare itself to, so it has no identity, it is like everything and nothing at the same time. there are cycles where the one consciousness separates itself into different souls so that it can know itself. when there are multiple souls separated, they do not know each other, so they experience themselves as a separate entity only by seeing themselves apart from others. this phenomenon allows the soul to experience pain and fear and all the other emotions that the characters go through. shinjis story, and everyone else in the show, is about the process of realizing that you are this separate entity, and learning to live and experience life as that entity. the ending of the show/movie was the coalescing of the individual souls back into the one consciousness, losing their temporary individual identities, but shinji decided that he would rather just go on living out his individual life and experiencing that. he says in the end that questions of who he is are always gonna be there, and that's because our identities are only informed by separation, and by accepting our role, then we truly start living life.

Shinji did it because she wanted to confirm she was a real, separate person. He was also angry and frustrated at her, just like she is at him.

But, instead of reacting and belittling him or trying to resist like she normally would, she caresses his cheek, an act of affection and intimacy she never openly displayed before and which takes Shinji so off guard that he starts bawling uncontrollably.

Her response of "How disgusting" is incredibly layered and open to interpretation, the most prominent being:

1) She knew he jerked off to her in her comatose state (since their minds/souls were "one" in Instrumentality) and was admonishing him for his disgusting actions.

2) It serves as a fulcrum for the whole point of the show which is the difficulty of human relationships and specifically the Hedgehog's Dilemma, wherein the more open with another person you are about yourself as a way of expression trust and affection, the more open you also are to getting hurt by that person. Asuka defies Shinji's expectations by showing an act of kindness during a terrible time and when all logic points to the person being a cunt from past experience, and yet still decided to be kind and vulnerable. It shows the duality and unpredictability that comes with navigating relationships.

3) "Kimochi warui" can also be translated as "Makes me sick". What this particular interpretation implies is the previous two but also hints that Asuka might be pregnant ("morning sickness") since the two most incompatible people in a relationship can still reconcile their differences to create a true miracle: a new life. Hence, the "Rebirth" part of the"Death" or "Detruction" that takes place in EOE.

The mecha battles and Christian symbolism is all window dressing for an excellent character drama that explores depression and the difficulty of navigating interpersonal relationships. It's kino.

Happiness can't be achieved in the absence of pain and others, and he accepts that he wants to be in the real world, with other people, even if that means that he will be hurt, because as long as he's alive there's a hope for something better, and it all starts with loving himself.

The First Ancestral Race sent out eggs or seeds in order to evolve life in other parts of the galaxy or universe. Within these eggs or "moons" are two gifts of evolution or "Seeds of Life": the Seed of Power, which creates singular beings of unimaginable power via their AT Fields (a literal energy projection of consciousness as a type of electromagnetic energy), and the Seed of Knowledge, which enables a species to eventually evolve into many that share their intellect with each other and become dominant that way. Adam's Moon (the "White Moon") lands on Earth first (in what is now Antarctica), and with his Seed of Power starts to manifest his progeny (the Angels). This is also known as First Impact and happened 4 billion years ago when the Earth was still forming; the sheer cataclysm of the impact sent up enough debris from the still nascent Earth to form its only satellite, our Moon.

However, Lilith also lands on Earth soon after in what is now southern Japan. Nicknamed the "Black Moon", it too begins to create life (it is a Seed of Knowledge type). Because the FAR did not want to create a race of godlike beings with both knowledge and power like themselves, they created a failsafe should the two different Seeds land on the same world. That failsafe involved an inhibitor that prevented the Seed from jumpstarting life; Adam's in particular was called the "Lance of Longinus" and prevented him from spawning his progeny. Thus, we are collectively the Lilim, the final Angel spawned from Lilith's blood (which is LCL and the primordial ooze that started all life on Earth).

SEELE as an organization began as an Illuminati type group who discovered the true "Dead Sea Scrolls" (seen in the anime opening), translated them from the original FAR language and began looking for Adam, whom they found frozen in ice at the end of the 20th century. The founded NERV as well and purposely made their base where Lilith's Moon resides. They funded the Katsuragi Expedition and took DNA from Lilith and removed the Lance of Longinus from Adam, combined their DNA and caused "Second Impact", which was only stopped when Katsuragi himself removed the Lilith DNA from Adam, which prevented a godlike being from emerging. He and everyone else except his young daughter died int he process, the Earth's oceans were left uninhabitable and over half the world's human population died as a result.

Despite this, SEELE still wants to bring about Instrumentality, which they believe (correctly) will turn them into godlike beings, but all of Adam's spawn must be defeated first, which return to Earth as Angels of destruction, whose own objective is to reach Lilith in Terminal Dogma and bring about the eradication of humanity for indirectly preventing their hegemony of the Earth.

It's one of my favorite lines in fiction because the context of the utterance matters so much and yet the context is literally the fucking point of it all so much so that the context is different for each person. All are valid because all explain what it means to an individual which the whole point of the series is trying to sort yourself out and find out your identity in relation to other people by forcing yourself into uncomfortable situations.

The dynamism of the human condition is everything and nothing. Existence is to want nothingness and yet avoid it at all costs because you will lose you when you are nothing. No pain but no pleasure either. War and peace, hate and love, rejection and forgiveness; all encompass what it means to be human and more importantly (perhaps most importantly, since you will likely only experience this to the fullest extent with someone you mutually love and hate, I.e. a spouse), how two people relate to each other to form a whole is a very old concept taken to a new level with EVA.

People get too caught up in the splendor of the robots and religious symbology or the weakness of the protagonist and miss that it's entirely a meditation on depression and the difficulty in connecting to people, yet the immense reward of happiness and fulfillment is worth it. It's a classic case of missing the forest for the trees. Is it tue greatest thing ever made? No. Is it an honest, passionate therapeutic project for a depressed man coming to terms with his despair through his art, that taps into some of the most important aspects of the human condition? Absolutely.

It's very slow, thought out, and methodical. It hinges just as much on slow conversations to carry the plot as it does big action scenes. Even the most convoluted technobabble ends up being important to the plot.

It's a "reboot" that takes the series in a different direction.

It's alright if you desprately crave more, but the saga really stops at End of Evangelion. Even if you chose to watch it I recommend waiting a few months after EoE to process what you have seen, because Rebuilds kinda leave a different taste in your mouth. One that personally I don't like, but you might. Regardless it's very different in tone and structure.

Ask an arthouse film fan and you'll get recs like NGE, Angel's Egg, Lain, Tatami Galaxy, Perfect Blue, LotGH and other anime that are actually worth watching. EoE is #30 on RYM and top 100 on Letterboxd, Angel's Egg isn't far off top 500 on RYM, Perfect Blue isn't far off top 200 on RYM, Lain is really high on Letterboxd and it's not even a film lol. Now let's see how that compares to MAL, which let me remind you is exclusively anime.
