I never understood why he refused to join Vader, really. I mean who would do that? I would totally have joined vader to rule the galaxy as father and son.
I mean obviously from Luke's perspective, not the perspective of someone who watches the whole movie and then ROTJ (knowing Palpatine would have just tried to kill Vader and turn Luke to the dark side and probably succeed).

Luke was always wavering between joining the Rebellion and just making a decent living on Tatooine. He knew that they were tyrannical and fascist, but from what we know in the deleted scene with him and Biggs at Tosche Station, he wasn't that motivated. Then, when he sees Owen and Beru's charred bodies at home, his hatred solidifies.
