I haven't read a marvel comic in a really long time (like last time I was 11 in the Dominican Republic), but didn't Peter revealing himself publicly immediately lead to assassination attempts against Aunt May and MJ? And after Peter went full murdered on those assassins to deter them, he turned on Iron Man, the jackass who convinced him that revealing himself was a good idea?

Again, it's been a really long time since I read the comic. I remember it ending with Peter just trapping Tony in organic webbing.

My knowledge of comics pretty much ended with content from the early 2000s. I know it was a huge deal when he went public as part of the Civil War storyline before being subsequently retconned out of existence in one of the worst-received Spidey stories of all time.

Comics writers *needed* that retcon, though, because they were smart enough to realize that a street-level guy like Spidey absolutely can't exist without a secret identity. It just hamstrings him in too many ways and stretches the credibility of the setting in ways that not even comics fans can stomach.

There is a grit and a degree of realism to Pete's setting that stands in total opposition to him having a public identity. Virtually the only recurring villain he has that wouldn't just instantly resort to using his family and friends against him is Kraven. He would consider it unsportsmanlike conduct. Any of the rest of them? Shit, they'd make some offhand comment about how Pete should maybe go home and check on his aunt, or maybe his girlfriend. And he would be fucked.
