Tyler is the masculine archetype as imagined by someone who never had a positive masculine role model to inform his view of it. Tyler possesses positive masculine traits, like independence, strong willpower, discipline, leadership qualities, etc, but lacks masculine ethics, which makes the goal of Fight Club and Project Mayhem a juvenile power fantasy. It's stated again and again that The Narrator and his followers are a "generation of men raised by women", and it has left them with no idea of how to guide their masculine nature towards any productive purpose. Positive masculinity erects civilization and imposes order and structure, Project Mayhem with no idea of what to do in a society where their nature is suppressed and without guidance react out of extreme resentment and instead seek to destroy society and impose social darwinism.
