There's something about the detective genre that seems to have doomers as protagonists.
Any recommendations for good ones?

i am obligated to say Maltese Falcon

The Third Man

I'm not overly fond of Joseph Cotten as an actor, but this has some of the best photography and lighting ever made, making post-war Vienna look like a German Expressionist painting just through subtle camera angles and use of shadow.

vertigo

Out of the Past
Seven
I like the Thin Man movies, but they aren't doomer.

Cruising

Yes, it's called Film Noir.

Kiss Me Deadly / Seven for the box double feature

Naw these are just shitty dated film noirs people are naming with chad protagonists who fuck all the women.
I’m asking for detective movies where the protagonist is kinda sleazy and beta and only gets a woman if by happenstance.
BR 2049 is another good example.
I’ve seen most of the movies mentioned in this thread and they are bad picks.
Good pick.

get fucked along with your garbage thread zoomer subhuman

LA Confidential

Faggot I watch a lot of movies I’m not looking for usual IMDB top 50 film noirs.

This has to be bait, you posted Chinatown in the the OP.

You should try like eurocrime and giallo films. Check out The Big Racket and Street Law and stuff like that. Not very detective a lot of the time but as you dig more they are more procedural.

For noir that's lesser known I like They Won't Believe Me and Where the Sidewalk Ends, they're pretty doomer. And then To Live and Die in LA is for sure up your alley.

Chinatown features an inept protagonist who gets his ass kicked and lied to the whole time and he uses some pretty scummy grifting tactics to get by

Gittes is not weak or inept, his introduction is Chad as fuck. A major theme is a strong man being broken by the system.

What are you talking about. The whole point of his character is he’s antithetical to the classic film noir hero. He gets beat up, barely understands fully anything going on and is Jack Nicholson.

Meanwhile here in this movie you have Russel Crowe chimping out, flipping chairs and hulk smashing people.

Under the Silver Lake

And then you have the worst one, Elliot Gould as Philip Marlowe. As if anyone wanted a weak autistic Jew as a noir protagonist, jesus fucking christ

Imagine being Robert Altman and thinking that deconstructing film noir is a good idea

Touch of Evil

Long Goodbye was great, weak autistic jew detective was funny af and a good pick for this thread.
The guy’s only friend was his cat

Another bad pick

This, but Orson Welles is the doomer

No it was let's take a fun genre and remove everything that was fun about it. It was lame, looked ugly and put such a bad taste in my mouth that I had to watch a good noir to wash it out.

Jake’s character is that he is a small time PI who stumbles into something huge and doesn’t let it go. I guess you could say he’s beta in the sense that he’s not high class and gets talked down to by the millionaires he interacts with. However he does end up banging one of their daughters and gets closed to blowing up their conspiracy. Jake shows a lot of character but at the end of the day he’s just one man up against the most powerful people in LA. Even though he fails he definitely punches way above his weight and there is something heroic about how he pursues it all the way.

Blade Runner
Blade Runner 2049
Brick
Blood Simple
Blue Velvet
The French Connection

Also Jake has already fallen once as a former cop

I think you need to lighten up.

Under the Silver lake
Inherent Vice

Great picks except Brick is by that nu-male guy
