2) Asuka and Rei in the elevator in silence after Asuka gets her period

and think there was another but I can't recall what it was. These were pointlessly long and I can't see how anyone could defend it. I thought this shit was supposed to be good, but it's too repetitious and doesn't develop the characters in any meaningful way.

Go in for a character study with decent cinematography because that's what's good about the show. The 'themes' are a mess of bastardization of already trash gnostic philosophy. The plot itself falls into memetics halfway through. The action is serviceable but not the reason to watch.
There is also a correct patrician answer to the best girl question, and it's neither the blue haired husk nor the insane tsundere ginger nor the menopausal alcoholic.

I was asking because I am hearing the new dub apparently changes the dialogue enough to alter the original meaning. Subs I usually find aren't that egregious.

Nah. That's a stretch. There are some retranslation decisions some people don't exactly agree with them making, but it's all still accurate to the original Japanese
The biggest one people have a problem with is the original Japanese version has a character complimenting Shinji. The word they use in Japanese translates to both "love" and "like" in English. While the old translation went with "I love you" the new one has him say "I like you".
That's about as drastic as it gets though. Really the way you watch it is up to you. There is no BAD version of evangelion

Eva is a garbage clusterfuck of story and characterization that isn't very well done by any aspect, but which attempts to compensate for its weaknesses by adding in waifu faggotry and NEUROSIS. The normal user can see this as the shit it is, and may enjoy it, hate it or be indifferent to it, but all the while recognizing that the series itself, regardless of their opinion, is plain bad.

However, these very aspects that try to smear over the shit of its core make it a breeding ground for aspie, unsociable underageb& faggots who engage in every kind of faggotry both online and in the real world. The broken, angsty characters all trying their hardest to hide from their mental issues, the SYMBOLISM, peculiar, complex machinery, the whole Freudian faggotry and everything about the Evangelion world fuels their fantasies of being a patrician, while the pity-party character backgrounds, emphasis on guilt tripping, and overall preachiness of the series make it fit just right with the mary-sueish drives of your average preteen and his sense of unwarranted self-importance towards the world. Exactly the kind of shit that makes little kiddies and underage retards eat this shit right the fuck up.

Gundam could've been better if it was a straight up military mecha show instead of including the protagonists' space autism. VOTOMS and Starship Troopers were both much better in that regard since they treat mechas as basically just tanks with limbs and the military being conventionally organized instead of having it rely on a teenage ace pilot with psychic powers coming out of nowhere.
