The Good The Bad and The Ugly is patrician’s choice
Once Upon a Time in the West is edgy contrarian’s choice
You're mostly right but look at stuff like Stagecoach, Red River, Gene Autry films, hell even TV like gunsmoke and whatnot.
Why?

Much like great space movies or great sword-and-sandal movies, nothing depicted in any of them ever happened, at all. So what? My three favorite movies are all set in a time, in a place, and none of it ever happened. Not even a little.
...
Rio Bravo is a straight western and that movie is both a masterpiece and a masterclass in how to write characters
Once Upon A Time is not contrarian, most people love it. I however, a real contrarian, hate it
>great sword-and-sandal movies didnt happen
are you retarded? Ben hur, spartacus, the ten commandments?
Today i saw The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. It was pretty good although not some kind of masterpiece. What's Yea Forums's opinion on it?

Little Big Man is injunkino
Revisionist Westerns can be amazing but the people that declare them the pinnacle of the genre clearly haven't actually seen that many westerns in the first place. It's like someone declaring The Shawshank Redemption their favourite movie, great film but suggests there's a ton of better shit they haven't seen yet.
