God we didn’t deserve them

Just finished it holy shit nuclear energy is fucking dangerous.

No it's not, it's letting people like the Soviets who are only concerned with their image have it. Literally the embodiment of 'not my problem'

I honestly think the roof cleanup segment might be one of the best scenes in media in years.

Sauce for this?
That's damn fine quotes way better than the show and sounds like Martyr Valery but need sauce

For those interested in what today's nuclear experts think about the show and the events/ideology it portrays, this is a pretty interesting interview with Dana Drábová, the director of my country's State Office for Nuclear Safety. Called the "Nuclear Grandma", she's the top nuclear scientist in the country and a huge proponent of nuclear power.

>lidovky.cz/domov/cernobylska-zahada-dodnes-nikdo-nevi-proc-grafit-prestal-horet-a-jak-by-se-hasil-ted-rika-drabova.A190612_161217_lide_krev

>Lidovky.cz: Do you consider the series is accurate?
>It is as accurate as a drama can possibly be. In terms of technicalities, there are some discrepancies in the timing. Something happened earlier, something later. For example, the helicopter did not actually fall when dousing the reactor, but half a year later. In Forsmark in Sweden, they did not find out about the radiation before Pripyat evacuation, but after it. Acute radiation syndrome takes longer to show. But I think these are all just small, unimportant details. The show wasn't about them, it was about the story. And as I see it, the story was told excellently. It's been a while since I've been so delighted by something.

(about her interviews with people who stayed in the exclusion zone)
>Lidovky.cz: What did these people tell you? Why did they decide to stay despite all that contamination?
>Ukrainian "forresters" - or those in Belarus - are interesting communities of people who have deep ties to the land and their families have lived there for centuries. The show only alludes to it. It actually didn't make sense to displace residents who were in their 60s, 70s, or 80s. It takes time for radiation damage to manifest, and they wouldn't have lived long for that. It may sound harsh, but for many people, this displacement has caused more suffering than radiation itself could have.

I think this is really nice.

I want to fuck Mr. Vasily!

Attached: 1098765434567.webm (1280x720, 2.43M)

I hated it, like he walked out just to get disoriented and spin around and fail to move a lot of rock.

Imo best scene was the end of ep2 when the sluice valve guys' flashlights stopped working and the Geiger counter just kept going, with the sharp short breaths, that was one of the best spooky moments I've seen from outside a movie.

Are you joking? The guy was in a horribly stressful situation, the scene was wonderfully shot.

Eat uranium dioxide pellets and die you disgusting necrophiliac degenerate.

IRL their flashlights went out too, they felt their way the valves. 2 of the guys are still alive, western media should interview them.

>Lidovky.cz: In the show, the evacuation of elderly people is illustrated by showing an old woman milking a cow. One of the soldiers shoots the animal in front of her eyes to force her to leave.
>Drábová: A soldier could not disobey a direct order, especially if someone else was watching him. People have also told me that they let a dog or cat run away a few times, but a cow is very big. In retrospect, it actually didn't make much sense to cull the animals in the zone. It was thought that their fur or feathers were contaminated, and the animals would spread the contamination. But it was a very small factor. On the other hand, I don't want to criticize them too much, because at the time they were desperate to minimize the consequences. They had so many problems to solve, so it seemed like an easy decision to make.

>Lidovky.cz: Did the pressure of the communist ideology, which is evident in the party leadership behavior, play a crucial role in the incident?
>Drábová: It was one of the factors, yes. A key factor why it happened at all and how. The Communist mode of governance was based on the fact that each group of scientists knew only a bit of information. The "divide and conquer" rule was in full effect. They were rarely allowed to put the whole situation in context. The Soviet leadership tried - and we saw it in the fifth episode - to blame the Chernobyl operators. The operators did share the blame. On the other hand, we don't know what would have happened if their information about the reactor was complete. Including the details about the graphite tips of controls rods.

>implying you wouldn't

Attached: 1456787655678.jpg (700x392, 134K)

Implying I'm not a pathetic, thirsty incel loser.

>"Hop in, dude"

Did anyone else find this show went from 8/10 to 10/10 when you realized it was actually about Trump and the danger of giving incompetent morons such huge power and responsibility?

Nah. The 15 other people just ran up there and did their jobs, instead we have to focus on one spastic cuckold that split open his boot and sucked at everything. We never really see how much these guys are told, or what they know about the radiation, so it seems like a leap to say that the guys in charge would tell them all the dangers and consequences instead of just "comrade put on this vest and throw this rock off ledge. Be back in 90 seconds or you go to gulag." So dramatizing it seems silly to me. Whatever though.

>Drábová: It was partly their fault, but there's also the fact that they didn't know what they were working with. There is also another factor, namely that you couldn't simply fail to accomplish the given task. It just wasn't done. They had to fulfill their socialist commitment. Nuclear engineers were a privileged caste, Pripyat was a very modern city for that time. A little insubordination and they would lose everything.

Lidovky.cz: How do you view the character of the scientist Valery Legasov, who tried to alleviate the consequences of the accident and in some ways comes across as a hero?
>Drábová: Make no mistake, he was a nomenclature Bolshevik, a card-carrying one. But he managed to leave his own shadow. There was nothing heroic about his life before Chernobyl. However, he leveraged his status as a nomenclature Bolshevik for good, because there were most likely only a few scientists in the USSR that the Committee would really listen to. Nothing is just black or white.

>Lidovky.cz: Was this 'sweeping under the carpet' a prerogative of the Soviet Union or is it a feature that one can find in every regime to some extent?
>Drábová: I wonder. It's a corporate feature, in a way. And the state, especially an authoritarian one, is a corporation. With its hierarchical, centralized administration, it necessarily has some corporate features. On the other hand, this is exactly why democracy builds safeguards. One of them is independent oversight. But as you know, it's always a struggle. When it comes down to it, a power plant is basically a factory that makes electricity. It is a constant search for balance and insistence that safety must always come first. At the beginning of any man-made disaster, there is a human error.

I had a dream once where he was a Bond girl and we was fucking James Bond, then I woke up and got sad because I think he would be great

He's smooth and seductive enough to make it work.

Attached: 1456765456789.jpg (1100x1650, 469K)

>Lidovky.cz: Russia has announced that it will shoot its own Chernobyl, with a secret CIA agent. What do you think about it?
>Drábová: Pure idiocy. I hope it's just fake news. Even Russians know how it was. Today we know what happened in Chernobyl, and how the HBO series described it is accurate.

>Lidovky.cz: Are there any question marks still hanging over the Chernobyl accident?
>Drábová: There is one question: How was the graphite fire extinguished? To date, no one is entirely sure how exactly it happened. Suddenly, the reactor stopped burning and spewing radiation into the environment. The graphite-moderated reactors are going away because graphite is absolutely a problem, but there are still ten of them in Russia, and the last is scheduled to be shut down in 2050. A reactor can be operated safely if you treat it with the respect it deserves. But you don't have much respect for anything if you're too busy fulfilling the demands of socialism at the time.

>Lidovky.cz: In one of your interviews, you said that even though it is cynical to say, the Chernobyl and Fukushima disasters were important learning experiences. What has changed?
>Drábová: Nuclear power has undergone an immense learning process in the last 65 years, which, like other industries, has also consisted of accidents and disasters. We have experienced three major accidents - each with different causes and consequences. Each gave us some lessons to learn and has further decreased the extremely low probability that the reactor core would be damaged. But probability is a bastard and - although it's small - it will never be zero. The richer we are, the more we demand zero risk, even though it cannot exist. We increasingly insist that everything that surrounds us must be completely safe. Little do we know that this too has its cost.

The visuals and sound just make for an excellent scene on their own, it's so beautifully done. I think it will go down as the most memorable scene in the series.

Thanks for sharing, interesting read

youtube.com/watch?v=10JsBT1yoG4

That was alright user
Will add in the next op

>LN: What would you do if you found yourself facing a similar emergency today?
>Drábová: We obviously have trainings, special procedures, crisis staff. We are prepared to do our best to protect people if something happens. The probability is very low, but not zero. I always tell my subordinates this - you have to do the best your knowledge and conscience command you to in order to protect people. But you also must be aware that when all is done and our actions will be judged ex post, many will want to shoot us at dawn. Because your decision making is always better when you're calm and relaxed, you have your feet up in your warm office, and there is no catastrophe hanging over you.

Yeah, her interviews are always good. Science would probably have less deniers if more scientists tried to really communicate with the public.

>except the reaction itself is a type of explosion, albeit a controlled one, and there is a whole fucking system built to prevent it from melting\exploding uncontrollably, which would be strange if there was no possibility of it ever exploding
>and there were already explosion-type tests done with prototype reactors all around the world
>and there were multiple incidents involving nuclear reactors (Including RBMK in 1975) exploding

>I.E the possibility of an explosion is common knowledge not only for physicists, but for anyone who completed general fucking education on high-school level.
>Yet all the supposed """scientists""" in the show are unable to answer the simplest fucking question of "how could it ever explode" and the whole plot is based on this premise

What a time to be alive.

super criticality of the core is an explosion, yes .

But yes you know this, and those guys didn't. That's how little they knew of nuclear/any type of physics

This is what happens when you remove market motivators like continued turnover/ability to make money from an industry like the energy industry, any idiot gets authority and shit like Chernobyl happens.

That's why whenever someone talks about the safety of Nuclear power, Chernobyl should be disregarded, because if anyone is dumb enough to let communists run nuclear power, they should know what the consequences are going to be.

I think a lot of the confusion comes from failure to understand the difference between a steam-explosion, hydrogen-explosion and a nucluar explosion. An RBMK reactor can in fact not explode in the last way as the fuel enrichment is not high enough.
People also seem to have problems with the difference between radiation and radioactive particles. You can't be contaminated with radiation, only with radioactive particles. An NBC suit won't protect from radiation, only from radioactive particles (and alpha radiation of course but so would a sheet of paper). However neutron activation is a thing and the reason materials that have been subjected to neutron radiation can become mildly radioactive.

Czechia. We have a rather morally - and possibly criminally - compromised PM at the moment, and on Sunday over 300k people gathered in the capital to demand his resignation, along with a few of his allies (for comparison, in the US a protest of the same magnitude would have to involve about 7 million people). And since we like our humor, most protest slogans were jokes.

Sorry, but I haven't the slightest.

If you’re asking about the guy who said to cut the phone lines, how are you coherent enough to fucking type

You even watch the fucking show?

Eat graphite you brainlet
It's not just a tv show don't you see? This disaster happened only 33 years ago and we didn't know about the heroic deeds of the people who sacrificed themselves to save millions.

The series is about a real catastrophe that wasn't so long ago and exposed the incredible human elements most young people and non-Russian speaking people didn't know.

I mean I can understand because show Shchadov has absolutely nothing in common with the real deal

Chernobyl drew big in the UK.

Oh dunno man I've seen the original in 1986 but our version had the radar images of radioactive clouds and how much fallout contamination we were getting. This version was much better I gotta say.
Glowing tea memes weren't funny, at least Dyatlov memes are funny.

Never been to Russia and wasn't too motivated to go (even though I'm living in a neighboring country) but Imma go there just to visit him. Every single day I spend there I'll visit martyr Valery and bring something.

Why does this kid play the same character in everything he's in?
I thought he was brilliant in Sacred Deer when I saw him for the first time but now I've realized that he doesn't do anything else and in fact it's his default state of being.

Do It For Him

>>Drábová: Make no mistake, he was a nomenclature Bolshevik, a card-carrying one. But he managed to leave his own shadow. There was nothing heroic about his life before Chernobyl. However, he leveraged his status as a nomenclature Bolshevik for good, because there were most likely only a few scientists in the USSR that the Committee would really listen to.

That is precisely what makes Valery Alexeyevich Legasov a god-tier hero and martyr. He lived a privileged life, he was a full member of the Academy of Sciences (basically the cream of the crop of Soviet science) and the deputy director of Kurchatov Institute, living the high life. He even covered up the subpar status of the Soviet reactors.

And he made a 180, burned all the bridges, forfeited his life, knowingly exposed himself to dangerous levels of radiation for four months instead of rotating out like everyone else.

He saw the truth in the ruins of reactor number 4 and walked out there a changed man, preaching the holy gospel of safety for industries and nuclear energy in particular. No one listened.
He kept fighting, publishing papers, urging the corrupt science establishment to change their ways, only to be faced with mockery and insults.
When he realized he lost the fight, he took his own life and left the holy tapes of epic whistleblowing behind.

This old lady is blinded in her hate of communism and unable to see.
How sad.

Throwing away the only ideology and only way of life you have ever known, all you ever believed, forfeiting everything you have including your life in the name of truth and doing what's right, that profound selflessness -that's what he did.
That's why he is a martyr.

His appearance suits the kind of role he plays at least. I genuinely wonder if he's even capable of anything else.

The dog died shortly after Legasov's suicide. Couldn't bear the grief.

Great post as always MartyrLegasovposter

It's nice that he can do both pure roles and slut roles so well. But could he pull off a character who sits right in the middle of the pure-slut continuum?

>"I've made a horrible mistake"

>implying he didn't enjoy it

His niche is playing a character who suffers, by the looks of it.

yeah big surprise that the guy posting is russian, never change ruskies!

>After the larger explosion, a number of employees at the power station went outside to get a clearer view of the extent of the damage. One such survivor, Alexander Yuvchenko, recounts that once he stepped outside and looked up towards the reactor hall, he saw a "very beautiful" laser-like beam of light bluish light caused by the ionization of air that appeared to "flood up into infinity"

Why are establiahmentarian thought leaders taken less seriously after the Iraq Debacle, the government encouraging rioting in Ferguson, the Deplorable campaign, and the 2008 disaster? Only because of all-powerful Russian hackers.

But I don't completely agree that he doesn't have range, he played a pretty innocent naive kid in Dunkirk, then a supernatural psychopath in Sacred Deer. In here he does the ptsd good too.

Mad Men managed to be far less historically accurate. The show creator boasted in every interview that he was moved to make the series out of pure hatred for the Anerican mainstream. The guy grew up in Beverly Hills and he talks like that.

Does this series have any waifus?

Yes

Legasov alone has changed my life like few things ever shown on TV have.

Chernobyl would turn into a trans playground

>Legasov alone has changed my life

In what way?

I think we should give Chernobyl to the trannies so they can have their own tranny society there.

not like it would lower their life expectancy

「Sixteen Tons」

A black cloud of coal dust is emitted into the air, each breath that his opponents take diminishes their lungs capacity by a small amount. After 10-20 seconds of breathing, their lungs will be completely coated with coal dust and unable to take in oxygen.

「Sixteen Tons」is best suited for fighting in tight spaces, for instance an indoor room or a cave, because it is harder to escape the dust that way.

If the opponent is holding their breath, or if they have a breathing apparatus of some kind on, 「Sixteen Tons」has a second offensive ability- it will coat the outside of the person in coal and then ignite the coal, burning them to death.

Was it a music video of the show?

But can it deflect the Emerald Splash??

unironically why can't they retrieve the corium and all the other meltdown shit?

people can approach the elephants foot for a brief time, why can't they send people in to chip pieces off of it to be safely stored elsewhere?

they could tear down the entire plant, piece by piece, until there is no trace of the nuclear power plant left, just an empty field.

then they can move people back into chernobyl.

where are you gonna store it nigga

same place they store all their other nuclear waste?

so Africa?
