Pathetic thread. PTA is good, but Fincher is better. Se7en, Fight Club, and Zodiac are flawless. Fight Club especially, pseuds pretend to hate it because normies love it but it is one of the greatest. He's an autist extraordinaire. PTA is a pussy who got mad over some jokes in a dark comedy.

Fincher was by far the best of those music video director turned film directors that came up in the 90s. At his best PTA was just aping directors from the 70s, mostly Altman. Fincher will always have that over him.

Why is he garbage?

They are equals.
Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and TWBB are bonafide masterpieces.
Se7en, The Social Network, and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo are also masterpieces.
Both have palpable touches on film that you can feel when watching them. PTA is more original, though, which might give him a slight edge.

I thought Fincher was appreciated around here, but apparently it's pleb power hour right now. He's been the most interesting filmmaker of the past 20 years.
PTA is good as well, but much more hacky, as displayed by the abysmal The Master. Definitely a case of a director peaking early.

I think pta in an interview said hard eight was originally called sydney but the network/distributer forced him to change it to hard eight.

They are both mediocre at best. Aaron Sorkin is a terrible writer. Which brings me to a point I forgot to make. PTA writes his own scripts whereas Fincher relies on writers.

Even though it might make me a pleb, I prefer David Fincher. The unique “look” of his films grabs my attention immediately, and the pacing is always on point. Se7en, Social Network and Zodiac were interesting from start to finish, always making me anticipate the next scene. PTA’s done that before, but The Master (which I just watched) had me checking my watch occasionally (even though it was brilliant in parts, and if you’ve studied the history of Scientology, you appreciate it even more.)

fincher by far. pta is a try hard who only copies the styles of established filmmakers. fincher has his own style but because he's a chad he only adapts airport novels and works on projects that won't ever film. and i think he probably knows more about the technical side of filmmaking than pta.

Phantom Thread was one of the worst movies I've ever seen, but There Will Be Memes was one of the best.
Fincher hasn't disappointed me yet, but I've seen less of his films.

I kinda like it, it fits the noirish tone of most his films.
