We used to have regular threads a few years ago.
Any anons still around?
I've been pretty inactive but now I've got time to write again. How about you? Working on anything?

Neon Blades
Seriously tho finishing my third feature this week (im 2weeks behind on schedule)

script about a door to door salesman that gets kidnapped by a girl who wants to put his insides into a stuffed animal

I wrote one screenplay and am working on a couple of teleplays. Funny enough I actually have some interest in my screenplay this year, though I wrote it quite some time ago.

I started browsing Yea Forums hoping to see threads like this.

Anyone got the redpill on blacklist?

You browse Yea Forums for sneeds not for actual discussion.

How do i find agent / manager

Poor broke incel with no friends : can I make it ?

no

75 bucks for some rando PA to read your script in 20 min in a Starbucks. No thanks.

I have some money but I'm friendless too. It fucking sucks, there's honestly very little you can do if you don't have people around you.

I'm thinking about writing screenplays, performing stand-up, and doing some shit for the internet. I thought about writing fictional crimes and mysteries and then making Fredrik Knudsen-type minidocumentaries about them. Then I can make a living filming weddings and just wait to see what happens. If I had only 3 friends I'd be making a short film and aiming at the festival circuit right now.

What a faggy question. Filmmaking isn't ballet.

Nice to see you again Source Film Maker general

Post a volunteer type ad on craigslist or whatever you have where you live
Also to make friends, the best thing is to volunteer at festivals and get to know people there

Redpill me on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4k brehs

I'm writing a passion project that I've been researching and adding to intermittently for the last 3 years
I don't really expect or want it to be made, having it finished and being proud to read it is good enough for me, but I will send it around still when I'm done
Currently on page 88, aiming it to 120 tops

It's nice.

I just watched "American Movie" last night. That doc will really inspire you to want to make a movie.

Its probably shit.

It's good for the price in terms of specs, the sensor being 4/3 is annoying but again, good considering the price especially if you're willing ot get a speedbooster. If you want a starter camera for low budget shit, it's pretty much the best choice you have at the moment.

If you guys are amateurs or professionals and just enjoy screenwriting/filmmaking; Here's our Discord that's been running for few years. Its mostly shitposting now but we got few dudes who work on somethings.

Just wrote and directed my first short movie. It was my application for film school. I got in, but i'm not sure how because i was really not happy with the final result. The script was great if i dare say so.

What is you guys' daily routine? Do you write everyday and shit?

only positivity here user

I write a little bit out of extreme boredom, hate it, begin hating myself, and scrap it.

Do this around once a month for maximum effect

My story doesn't even have a cat, but people keep telling me I need to save it. Well, I suppose cats are good for marketing. Look at Captain Marvel!

Thank you for funding the arts by paying to go to "film school"

it's very good user, I'm actually proud of it

why not talk here instead? fuck discord, it's unappealing

Nah, I'll make it. I'm creative, I work hard, I'm good with people and I'm naturally good at business and making money. I also pretty much already know every aspect of filmmaking and can wear as many hats as possible if I have to stay independent.

How many films have you made and where can we watch them?

for filmmaking talk ,all the old FMGers are still around.

I've made one short film and I'm not linking it here because I don't want people to know I browse Yea Forums

FilmMakingGamers

So you've made one short film and you know every aspect of filmmaking?
What's the first scene of your short, a depressed creative waking up in his room and going through the mundane morning routine?

No it's about a depressed creative waking up and having someone be mean to them online

I've made two short films independently, got a few (very few) festival selections, now I've written a third one and will try to get proper financing for this one.
Also applying to get some work in commercial videos to pay the bills, will have my test day tomorrow, wish me luck guise.

Good luck bro. What would you have done differently if you could go back in time?

fuck that
shoot on film

subtle kek

I want to say better networking at film school, but then I remember that most of my fellow students were useless idiots who haven't achieved anything so idk.

Buy a camera. Make a movie. Boom you're a director.

Anyone wanna give a read to my fantastic ninja script?

Once it's done I might let you guys see it

Do you guys just start writing with a vague end in mind, or do you break every scene down beforehand and connect the dots while you write?

Attached: 1560606901534.jpg (767x1024, 214K)

I don't see how anyone can write without having had broken things down first. Back when I tried doing that I always hit a point where I think "what's next?" and have no idea how to proceed

If you want to be academic about it, the main twist of your film generally sums up your story's thesis. So it's most essential to know what your story's thesis is to know more or less how the ending is. Then you add to that the beginning, and start spinning from there.

>his films have a story
>not making just le experimental artsy films
LOL TURBOPLEB HOLLYWOOD WANNABE LMAO

that's great user

After having the idea, usually I flesh out the beginning scene(s) which introduce the character and his status quo before the story starts, then I map out the turning point (climax, the big reveal) and the resolution/epilogue
the writing of the rest of the movie per se is basically trying to come with a narrative/plot that best drives the story between those 3 points in the best and most striking way possible - it is just "filler" if you think about it, since it's scenes that only exist to prepare you for the real one

>write script for full length micro-budget horror comedy
>spend months plotting it out in my head and doing pre-production
>book time off work to film it
>time comes to film
>none of my friends take it seriously
>camera footage looks like shit anyways
>ends up only being fifteen minutes with poor audio

Attached: 1383490063115.jpg (342x245, 16K)

That's why you don't use your friends as crew unless they're actually filmmakers as well

>Any anons still around?
I am. I used to post. I've started work on a feature film. It's going well. Maybe.
It could be going a lot better to be honest.

what was the script about user?

This
If you work, put an ad on facebook or a film crew website saying you'll pay like 50 bucks a day or something and get a crew of 2-6 people. Find some actual actors (you can probably find leads who will work for free, alternatively do as above and pay minimal amounts).

Even low-budget filmmaking costs money to do it right. So do it right. Set aside at least a thousand bucks (if not ten) and do it properly
Also
>camera footage looks like shit anyways
>ends up only being fifteen minutes with poor audio
You should make short films before feature films to learn how to do all this shit in an environment where it doesn't matter too much if you fuck up

are you the cunt who got financing for his project and told us about it?

No? I'm self-funding at the moment

what's your budget then?

Friends and I are trying to put together a sketch comedy show, I'm writing/directing. I have 11 sketches written so far, each about 5 mins long. We just wrapped filming on the first one a week ago and are in the process of editing. It's difficult to get everyone together since we're all just doing it for fun right now and have real jobs/obligations to work around, but it's coming together nicely so far and I'm pretty proud of what we have.

what's it about and what problems are you having? tell us your shit

Attached: 1493919133032.jpg (292x227, 25K)

Around ten grand, give or take
I only filmed a very short amount. But one of the people I cast (who thankfully is only in the bit that I filmed) couldn't remember any of their lines. So the entire shoot had to be reorganised around this one guy being unable to remember his lines
I've managed to make it work in the edit, but it pisses me off and I can't figure out if it's worth reshooting. I figure I shouldn't (or should wait until the end) because otherwise I might not shoot the rest of the film.

The film's about a hitman. But it's a drawn-out slow drama that purposefully avoids or subverts all the usual tropes. There's very little action though it's incredibly violent

Bros I have a dilemma

I've only had one project so far, but I feel like I'm ready to take a definitive leap towards filmmaking. I want to start a video production company, start finding gigs, and when I'm making money out of it I plan to quit my current job and start my own projects. I already have some money saved up, some experience, and I've been educating myself non-stop about filmmaking and writing for the past couple of years. I'm not in the US and where I live my best bet is to create my own structure for my projects, so starting my own business seems like the best path.

The problem is, I'm socially retarded and don't have people to make anything with me. I have a handful of friends, and have been trying to persuade them to join me even though they seem reluctant to. Honestly they're not experienced, or particularly hardworking or smart, but I'm trying to win them over because imo it seems like having a team, even if it's not a great one, is better than doing anything by myself.

Am I fucking up? Reading posts and interviews of independent filmmakers online you hear horror stories about how a bad crew can fuck up the entire project, like said. But doing things by myself might be too much work, and even if I end up with the money to hire help I can't imagine myself working with a bunch of people I don't know, I'm too autistic for that. What the fuck should I do?

Are you in Ottawa Canada by any chance? I'm in literally the same situation.

If you're in the UK near london hit me up.

Currently outlining my short. Going to try to write the first draft while I'm off from work.

What software are you guys using? I'm giving fountain + Google docs a try and then just dropping it into writer duet or final draft to export it into pdf.

It sounds like you want to do everything, not specifically narrative films.
I'd recommend doing 2 things.
1. start going to events/gigs/shows and bringing your camera and filming and editing them to give yourself practise and also build a showreel
2. start trying to find runner jobs on big film productions and volunteering to be first ac (or dop if possible) on short films around your area [check facebook groups]

ah-bloo-bloo

I'm trying to make it as a media composer, but it's tough. Especially when they can choose stock music over me.

For short films, paying for a music is a luxury most can't afford

>The film's about a hitman. But it's a drawn-out slow drama that purposefully avoids or subverts all the usual tropes. There's very little action though it's incredibly violent
this seems interesting
if you're not okay discussing the plot, can you say what movies you were inspired by?

Nah, I fully understand, and I've done stuff for free, but I'm reaching that point in my portfolio where I'm not sure if doing the work for "experience " is particularly worth it.

Sure, I'll struggle but sure.
Casino Royale
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Only God Forgives
The Booth At the End
Cosmopolis
The Dollars trilogy
Childhood of a Leader
I don't know how influential these films were. Some more than others, some specifically for certain scenes/aesthetics, others more generally in that they reflected on how I put the script together.

It was written before I saw them, but it bares a structural similarity to The House That Jack Built (without the narration), and has some overlap with Too Old To Die Young as well.

nice selection

What's the best free screenwriting software and why is it trilby?

Attached: fedora_purple.png (400x400, 96K)

Like, it's not a film, but I did music for a play that had me composing music on set six days a week, four hours a day, for six weeks. Paid nothing. An "experience" gig. It was solid for my portfolio, but shit man, a guy's gotta make a living, too. Hours like those you can't even really hold a regular job.

it's trelby, because it is

yup, nothing beats trelby for me
it gives you absolute freedom to type however you want
the only thing missing is compatibility for dual dialogue, font elements like italic and bold and the fact that scene heading lose bold when exported to pdf

The absolute state of" /television & film/". The average sneed/pol/hating on women/twitterbait post will be on bump limit while threads about the actual subject matter die in 2 hours max. And no, I won't join your gay discords. That's another cancer for another day.

The one and only.

What software do I use to write scripts?

...

I hated this fag before the allegations so I'm not going to start liking him now just because he's getting #MeToo'd. He epitomized everything that's horrible about the modern film industry (talentless rainbow haired Jew that gets paid millions to make fantasy garbage for the comic con bugman crowd because his daddy was famous.) This is one career that I'm more than happy to see the feminists destroy.

Attached: KanyeShrug.gif (500x280, 1.09M)

Nah I'm in Brazil. I'd love to be in Canada or the UK, I assume it would be much easier to find likeminded people when it comes to cinema over there.

I've sold 2 scripts already, but haven't been working due to serve loneliness, depression, and laziness. AMA

This except unironically
Also his dad should be in prison

Get the fuck out of my Industry. Faggot

Is there any hope for the scripts you sold being produced or are they going to sit on a shelf for the next few decades?

One was, but only after it was rewritten 20 times by a bunch of losers.

how do you feel when your creation being raped by the hollywood kikes?

What was the movie?

I still get residuals for it, and I wasn't overly attached. Only disappointed that it could've had potential.

Can't give my identity, less I be another Max Landis on here.

>another Max Landis on here
I doubt you could reach that level of faggotory if you tried. Besides, Max got big posting on twitter and appearing on >popular internet show

>Any anons still around? Working on anything?

I don't know if anyone would remember me I was the guy tryna make a slasher film. A lot of my interest and inspiration for filmmaking has died since we used to have these threads regularly, does anybody else feel the same way? It feels like the industry is collapsing on itself and its impossible to get in and get noticed. It's especially hard to stay motivated when you have no friends to work with or even know anybody else interested in filmmaking.

I have a post horror script I plan on tackling soon. Wanna do some research about ptsd and horror and what that means to non-horror people.
I had to ditch a millennial ghost story that my heart just wasn't in.
Plan on also using some 16 mm film I picked up for a camera the gf inherited.

I know this too much. Sit there at a laptop with no wifi and only a script program and my old iTunes. Listen to an LP or mix then try to hammer out some pages. Look at the dialogue, hateblife and self. Try again the next day and hope something good happens.

Self loathing is not good for writing. Probably need to take some time for myself to get back into a good groove.

I'm sure Ottawa must have some independent scene. Almost every major Canadian city has an independent scene/film organization. Try looking into those and partnering with likeminded people. Don't matter how social indept you are, all it takes is a small leap to get your passion going.

but do you have an idea? you can't just write something out of staring at the computer
most of my stories have come from direct influence of a movie: either movies I wish would have gone in a different direction or movies I see would be a good fit for some idea I may already have
so my rec is watch movies and read about stuff you may be interested in writing about

Independent filmmakers. Aspirations to be like them and how I'm potentially closer to them than the likes of a Fellini or Spielberg.

Small scripts? Or larger ones? Did a big company buy them? Were they made? How much you get for each?

Did you choke a girl for playfully slapping you ass as you were naked with her in kitchen? If not then you're not going to be a Max Landis.
Give us the deets fellow nerd.

I totally do. I had a ghost one I was working on. I would plan out major story beats first then craft characters backstories/motivations/purpose.
Then I go to the computer and try writing and I just feel disappointed already and can't get any motivation to get to Act 2.

I'm guessing it's just that I'm writing without meaning. Like I'm forcing a meaning that doesn't feel natural.

I came here to see threads like this and all i got were Nolan quotes, superhero shit posting, and the worst memes on Yea Forums.

Attached: 1546932886920.gif (284x210, 947K)

have you researched similar movies? download their scripts and pay attention to the progression
every scene is typically a direct response to the previous ones, especially in a protagonist-driven movie where everything else bounces off him
you're probably lost in setting up the motivations for your story to occur, as in you want something to happen but you can't put the characters in a situation such that it happens naturally and convincingly

1-5 mins start small.

If you set aside an hour or two a day where you sit down and tell yourself you HAVE to write (but it doesn't have to be good) you'll be amazed about how much you write and how fast you write it.
If you don't set aside time and only write when you "feel" like it, you'll never write. And if focus on making everything perfect the first time you put words on the page, you'll burn yourself out with self-loathing very quickly.

Attached: 1551914481506.jpg (500x375, 37K)

/swg/ and /fmg/ are like a rare and beautiful diamond in a valley of shit.

Is watching/reading as much stuff as you can in order to have a diverse set of references important, or is this time better spent writing, working on your projects and so on?

Attached: 107.jpg (449x721, 114K)

Explain.

Git gud at social interaction
Like, seriously. Being a filmmaker isn't like being a writer or a painter where you can pretty much go off and do your own thing. You need to learn to work with people. I'm not saying you have to turn yourself into some charming motherfucker overnight, but at least learn to get over whatever anxieties you have holding you back.

Shots are nice but the cutting is off

I see watching movies as research time, it's like training yourself to see how the story unfolds
I watch everything with subs on so I can focus on the dialogue as well
it's especially rewarding when you watch a shit movie and you understand why it failed

Why not both?

>I got in, but i'm not sure how
Because art "schools" don't really give a shit about the quality of your work and just want to collect your money

Nice overall concept but yeah, the execution was off. The audio mixing was absolutely terrible and the color pallet was pretty flat.

did you take any classes/read any books on screenwriting or are you just good?

>it's especially rewarding when you watch a shit movie and you understand why it failed
Yep. Every time I watch a bad movie I'm figuring out potentially better ways to execute a particular scene or concept of it in my head.

I don't always have a lot of free time.

That's retarded, movies just suck out your soul. Especially anything Hwood. You're better off exploring on your own, you'll need it.

If you don't watch movie and you don't read books your movies will not be good.

yea, I guess like for a basic framework. More than that just further deconstructs your creativity. Opposite effect than what you would expect to happen (that you absorb it). It eats preconstructed tunnels into your brain.

>sjw film number 10156311650516
>some cunt sitting around stuffing her mouth with shit within the first 10 mins
>long pointless expositions so they can pretend to be intellectual
>everyone thinks the main character is amaze balls
>remember tell don't show

nothing makes you want to eat a bullet more than having to edit a film by indie directors who were hired because they're lesbian rather than their directing skills but they get so much affirmative action money to waste and i'm still new

I've written a short script that's basically a reverse shining where the mom goes nuts and tries to kill the father and daughter in an isolated mansion
I've also thought about making the mom the stepmom instead of the actual mother to further distance the relationship between the mother and the daughter not sure if I want to go with this idea and rewrite parts though
I don't hate it my ideas but they're amateur as hell

Attached: fadein.jpg (300x168, 5K)

Nah, make it the actual mom. Closer to reality. Look up the devouring mother by Freud. Every mother wants their child dead if it wasn't for the father. Undeniabl truth
No shade tho, I love my mom
