I liked Chucky in curse and I liked Brad Douriff's daughter and I liked the atmosphere. However I didn't really like any of the other characters. It felt like a Direct to Video movie. It wasn't awful but it could've been better if he had made the characters more likeable and maybe recast the lesbian sister. She really brings the whole movie down.

Curse is propped up by the fact that people were just happy that they went back to horror after Seed completely buried the franchise, but they really had no choice. Besides that it's extremely poorly written and directed. The cinematography was good though, I'll give it that.

The old Andy is just an adorable kid that is a bad actor. The old Chucky is a genric 80s slasher in doll form. In the reboot, Chucky and Andy have a genuine friendship and it is more tragic to see things fall down from there. Chucky has more character development in the reboot, being a doll that really wants to be Andy's best friend no matter what, he later slowly turns to vengeance and we watch him change from an innocent cute child-like Toy into a brutal killer. The new Andy also has more personality. He has a friendship with Chucky, but was also more anti-social towards the beginning, which is why he got the doll, then he found new friends and he doesn't need Chucky anymore.

The original Child's Play is one of my all-time favorite movies, but I will say that I loved the new version of Chucky, maybe more than the original, for all the reasons you just stated. He works well as a tragic character and honestly I'm surprised they never explored this angle earlier.
