Back when DVDs were new, there was a perception that something like "the complete series of a popular adult TV show on DVD" was a high-class item, and HBO priced it to take advantage of this.
Hard to believe in this age of "Two for $1" dvds at Walmart, but it was real.

Because VHS were not generally sold to end consumers until Batman came out for $15 everywhere. Rental stores bought them for $89.98 and kids like me rented them and took them home and dubbed them onto a blank tape with two VCRs.
