If you read about the real expedition, it wasn't lead that made them sick; although in this interpretation, it's heavily implied that it is.
From the wiki, it was basically zinc deficiency from a lack of meat. This lead to already high, but not fatal, levels of lead being released from various parts of the body.
So basically it was just "normal" malnutrition.
The TV show didn't really explain much about the spiritual nature of what is going on. You had that naked eskimo guy in the sickbay. The floating body in the underwater scene. Then you just has a CGI bear running around. They needed to flesh that out more.
