This is the best TV show since Twin Peaks The Return

And the fact that barely anyone is talking about confirms that the majority of people are absolute brainless plebs.

Why is there so much pause between dialogue? Is everyone retard?

Too long and boring. It was obvious that Refn was new to shooting TV shows and tried his best to make the scenes as long as possible so that he would make the runtime.

>wasting a single minute of your life looking at Miles Teller's visage

By the time you're done with the show you could have watched 9-12 films during that time.

>make the runtime
I'm pretty sure there was no set runtime for Refn to conform to, he either chose to make the show 13 hrs in length or shot until he ran out of money.

Enjoying art is not a job.

>everyone says the Cartel episodes are the worst because they're so slow
>they're easily the best episodes
only episode 5 was as good as episode 2 and 6 imo

>even mentioning this in the same sentence as TPTR

Attached: 1495827181344.jpg (600x918, 102K)

>she will never peg you
what's the point bros

>t. kid damaged by instant gratification media

I didn't mind the Cartel episodes at all, I actually really loved episode 2. But episode 7 and 8 were easily my favorites.

I like Refn, but the dude really needs a studio or producer on his ass with a big pair of scissors. Background music of one scene of cops talking was the slow movement to Mahler's fifth symphony, and it played like all of it, before going over to the slow movement of Beethoven's seventh, which played until the development. That's a long scene.

Our brains are really fast. We can understand words faster than people can speak them. We read faster than we talk, and we can watch regular stuff 1.5, even double speed and not miss a thing. The show is good, but it's like someone reading Dickens to you, and not speed reading, really taking their time with every word, and every phrase, and every small character distinction, or how the book can possibly use more words than is absolutely, quite necessary, usually, to say something that is, without so much pretension, what one could think of as being, in a manner of speaking, rather a bit simple.

OOOOOH MANDY

Drugs

Listen, it is not even close to as good as TPTR - nothing will ever be. But TOTDY is easily the best series SINCE that show. Every other tv show pales in comparison and TOTDY is the only show I've enjoyed since Twin Peaks.

That's not dark

i want her to be my gf

How does this compare to TWD or GOT?

This. I fucking hate movies in general and find all of them unrealistic, passive-minded pieces of garbage that are good to entertain you only when you have both hands occupied by some activity like eating and can't read a book, but these are among the poorest dialogues I have ever seen and the pauses just make it unrealistic, pretentious, boring and ugly. Books are so much better than this shit.

It was shit.

heheh good joke

I completely understand this criticism, I just don't agree with it. It may be simple to execute, but the pacing and the portrayal of the characters and most of the story relying so heavily on visual subtext (even if it isn't too subtle) is something I really enjoyed and was unlike any other current TV show. I should also clarify that I am already a huge fan of Refn, I've loved everything he has done besides Only God Forgives.

This is some very nice bait, good job sir.

Miles Teller was trying way too hard to be Goose.

This show was slightly less boring than watching paint dry. Like golf, it's great to watch if you want something to fall asleep to

The serious is worth it for the soundtrack alone

Also, some nice blues, reds and purples

The soundtrack is almost better than the show itself.

Wait. This is a TV show? Thought it was a movie. Deffo gonna watch it now. What's it on?

What books do you like user?

It's on Amazon Prime.

>some nice blues, reds and purples
The lighting, color palate, camera movements, framing, sound design are all absolute kino, better than any TV show.

>Why is there so much pause between dialogue?
Because Refn watched Twin Peaks two years ago.

So the two cops in the beginning. Are they corrupted or something?

movies are instant gratification media you fucking monkey, all of them

I appreciate that. I've been very slowly making my way through the show, watched the first two episodes, and sometimes it's great. The scene when he's meeting her Baldwin dad is great. The sets have a lot to them, and there's so much conflict in that scene that it's almost suspenseful. That's something that Drive did really well, scenes moved at a reasonable pace until there was a scene packed with conflict and meaning, and then it slowed down. Problem that I have with the show is that every scene is glacial, even when there's next to no conflict. Meeting your underage girlfriend's coked out dad is tense, the classic bomb under the table. Some old dude telling a story, or getting a tarot reading, is not. If Drive had Albert Brooks and Hellboy staring at each other the way Gosling and the girl did, it would be insufferable.

Yes. Miles Teller character is even a creepy pedo.

Why is incest a common theme with Refn's characters?

I would say push through the first 2 or 3 episodes and see if you still like it. The conflict definitely ramps up from there and episodes 5 through 8 are well worth sitting through some of the slower moments of the show.

Because every man wants to fuck his own mom.

thnx for the mention user. Watched the trailer and Added it to my watchlist on prime

Attached: just.jpg (516x516, 36K)

Does every man want to fuck his own daughter too?

Have sex

No, that's disgusting. Every girl wants to fuck her own father tho.

>Joyce and Plato
hacks

Because Refn.

Attached: 1363317894994.jpg (640x2720, 211K)

That's good to hear, good to know. It's not that I'm hating it, which is honestly more frustrating. I mentioned Dickens because more than anything it reminds me of reading Great Expectations as a fourth or fifth grade summer reading list thing, because I would hate reading it while I was reading it, but as soon as I put it down after finishing a chapter, I would reflect back and suddenly like it. As much as I hated the experience of reading it, I loved what I'd read.

Not to be reductive, but one can think of a good film as being made up of, say, four or five great scenes and no bad ones. You have your brilliant set pieces, or your serious clashes, developments, big tracking shots, what have you. The kind of scenes that stay with you, become iconic, clipped out and hosted everywhere. You have those key scenes, and then you have a lot of scenes just moving you to your next big moment. You can't have an action movie that's nothing but iconic set pieces, or a drama that's wall-to-wall Michael Corleone shooting Sollozzo and McCluskey kind of scenes. And even worse is treating every scene like it's a great, vital scene regardless of the conflict or changes happening in it. I'll keep watching, because when it's good, it's great, but I think Refn really would benefit from some studio / producer interference, because not everybody is so patient.

>get me his non union Mexican equivalent

He's too charming for the role. Teller's a better choice for an unlikable psychopath.

There is no such thing as best since Twin Peaks The Return

lmao

Do I have to watch the first Twin Peaks before the Return?

I loved The Return, but only because all of the silence and pauses were substantial and significant. Just having characters talk really slowly and pause a lot to try to be "artistic" is like tracing the Mona Lisa calling yourself an artist. There has to be meaning behind everything, which is what Lynch does so well, and it's why most people can't pull off the things he does. When they try, there's no meaning behind it. I haven't seen this show yet, but Neon Demon was absolutely terrible because it was all style and no substance, so I have a feeling that's what this show is, too.

you have to watch the original two seasons, then Fire Walk With Me, then The Missing Pieces and then The Return

Yes, you have to watch the original series, then the movie, Fire Walk With Me, then The Return. If you skip any of it you'll likely be completely lost.

the absolute state of Yea Forums. so glad I only phonefag it these days while shitting so I don’t have to read garbage thoughts like this

>art
/thread

What frustrates me about this show is how enjoyable it would have been if it had just hurried the fuck up a little more. Thematically, visually and narratively I feel like I should be loving it. I really think if could have benefitted from embracing its pulpier side a little more. You might think I'm a pleb now but my favourite scenes were mostly the lighter ones. Like the chase sequence in episode 5, everything involving the police department and the conversation between Martin and Janey's dad in the pilot.

>watching the third season of a show without knowing anything about it
shiggydiggy

>Refn really needs a producer to step in and water down his work so it’s less unique and more accessible to the general audience. i hate when filmmakers get to 100% execute their vision because it goes against my preferred tastes and expectations

>miles teller

closed, hidden, unsubbed, unliked, blocked

I'm only on the third episode but I'm enjoying it

>pilot

this argument would hold some weight if the end result hadn't've been so fucking disappointing

Not everybody's vision is good enough to be a final draft, and even if it is, not everybody is skilled enough to bring their vision to life successfully. George Lucas is a great example of that.

the police department scenes are insane

user, have you been stealing from the cartel?

yes now do naughty things to me mummy

Was she really The High Priestess of Death or did she just think she was?

we will never know. amazon do not promote the show - by comparison that end of world gay show of them had commercials all over online - and a second season wont happend.

and by the pace of it, this story cannot be told on a movie. so it was a waste of time, unless refn does the ultimate hack act and do a comic book sequel like fight club.

she is fine but not as hot as this picture sells and not a good actress.

>muh realism

Go back to watching to your supahewos.

It is obvious that you have never watched a movie of his.

>when she starts slapping Princess Tiger Free

haha no i would never do such a thing why do you even ask haha...

Having just finished it last night, I can say it's one of the most important TV shows since Game of Thrones or at least True Detective. Highly ambitious basically 15 hour long art house film cut into episodes which no one has ever done before. Done well too. People will look back on it fondly. That said, I never want to watch it again. And I wish Refn ended it clean instead of giving Season 2 bait but that's just hopeful thinking because I figure a S2 if it ever came out would harm it.

>Highly ambitious basically 15 hour long art house film cut into episodes which no one has ever done before.

Ahem.

Attached: tpreturnmedium.png (1379x1781, 3.78M)

Based phoneshitting poster

As much as I like it, Twin Peaks was more more mainstream and easy to follow/watch than this. It had normie masses watching and discussing it at their cubicle coolers ffs. Zoomers won't remember though.

>Highly ambitious basically 15 hour long art house film cut into episodes which no one has ever done before

>Twin Peaks was more more mainstream and easy to follow/watch than this

Attached: 1519739884452.jpg (1080x1080, 119K)

What the fuck are you talking about? Viewership basically tanked after the first two episodes. Normies fucking hated the Return because it didn't pander to their nostalgia. All my normie friends went right back to Game of Thrones and never talk about The Return anymore. Yea Forums is basically the only place I can openly discuss The Return with other people that actually appreciate it.

the return had scores of characters, memorable scene after memorable scene, and most importantly, memes. TOTDY had like five characters, a couple good scenes, and most disappointingly, no memes.

To be fair, I think the memes of The Return had a lot to do with it's weekly release and episodes being discussed individually while and after they were airing.

>And the fact that barely anyone is talking about confirms that the majority of people are absolute brainless plebs.
pretty much filtered out the pleb youtube critics

Fuck are we not allowed to like both now?

this

i would give the show more of an effort but i hate watching this guy. hes so normal

As a matter of fact we aren't allowed to like anything at all here.

yeah no. it's actually pretty terrible. has some nice visuals but narratively it's basically 2 hours worth of plot stretched to 13 hours. there's probably an hours worth of content of different characters dancing for chrissakes.

Of course you can. I think the Return is a much better show and pretty much the greatest television show that will ever be made, but I also really liked TOTDY. They are very different shows, despite SOME similarities in pacing and atmosphere and each have their own attributes to appreciate. TOTDY is simply, in my opinion, the best TV series since The Return, not similar to The Return or as good, but better than any other TV show that has come out since.

H-he's fast!

the pornographer episode was so much better than the rest of them it almost made me sad to think what could have been if it had kept that level of quality throughout the 13 hours.

>Okay, boys. Rape him.

i wasn't really into the show even though it had some high parts. i would unironically pay to produce a spinoff about the homicide department lieutenant though.

that whole episode and the scene of the mexicans delegating the hit on the blacks down the food chain was pretty much what i wished the whole show had been like, though i feel like i've seen a similar scene in a movie or show before but i can't remember where exactly.

Its true that this show is a plebfilter. If you like it youre a pleb with no taste of your own only saying you like it so you can be a contrarian with ebin taste.

The pacing was fucking perfect, you plebs

>the best TV series since The Return
You know, I don't disagree, I just don't think that's much of an achievement, because TV is shit.

You mean Mulholland Drive? With the Hitman botching an assassination?

Goose looks too old
>mfw I realize Miles Teller is 32

Attached: 1513398457330.jpg (400x400, 14K)

episodes 9 and 10 are truly something else

the only interesting thing about the show is the idea its seeing the world through the eyes of a barely functional autistic

lol nice way to out yourself as a pleb

That is actually a fair point.

you probably actually think they are good writers lmao

LE DEXTER MAN killed like a bitch before the end LMFAO Jesus is love Jesus is life
Seriously though what was Refn thinking building up Martin as main character and then not giving his death any payoff or revenge from the alien people?

Attached: fagkill.jpg (1280x720, 54K)

i don't know it's been a long time since i've seen mullholland. specifically the idea of some crime lord ordering a hit and it getting delegated down through the organization to the street level just felt very familiar to me.

i had a feeling he was going to get murdered that episode because killing the main character and then having no payoff or resolution is a pretty refn thing to do. seeing his gf get shot in the face was pretty shocking though.

best girl

He's not the main character

who is? jesus? yaritza?

i mean it's pretty clear martin is the protagonist until jesus kills him and then kind of takes over that role. i don't think jesus was the protagonist from the start though. if he was we would have started with him in episode 1 and not martin.

It's an ensemble show. Sure, Martin's viewpoint was the most prominent one but from the very beginning it followed multiple characters. Martin, Jesus, Yaritza, Viggo, Not Naomi Watts, Janey... I wouldn't say it's the type of story that has one definitive protagonist.

are you implying Jena Malone looks anything like Naomi Watts?

Twin Peaks season 3 is massively overrated compared to most other Lynch work. This at least had a fresh concept and looked great untill their budget started running out.

If this show wasn't so heavily nihilistic, I'd almost read a karma theme into his death, considering he killed his giffle's dad for no real reason and sort of crossed the line there, whereas he previous murders were more justified. Agree with the GF getting shot thing, though. You don't get to see young nubile babes get graphically shot in the head very often. I made an audience gasp when it happened.

Yaritza/Jesus and Diana/Viggo

Honestly, Janey's dad had it coming and he actively threatened him. It was one of the most justified murders in the show.

WELL YOU CAME AND YOU GAVE WITHOUT TAKING
BUT I SENT YOU AWAY, OH MANDY

Attached: 1537420369488.webm (1280x688, 1.86M)

this. also did i zone out and miss how he knew that martin and his partner did that or is it just implied that martin told janey and janey told her father?

I don't think so. I mean he held the threat of blackmail over his head saying "I own you" but he never really asked him to do anything. Was waiting for the "help me cover up this heinous action" bit that never came. He basically just insulted the guy repeatedly for liking underage girls and that was the extent of it (while at the same time struggling with his own weird fetish of liking underage girls). What exactly was justified about his murder that was more justified than the rape porn guys or kid diddlers?

I think it was meant to imply that he is powerful and has eyes everywhere. I mean, aside from the more obvious tiger theme that seems to relate more to his daughter, his house literally has an eye theme.

Attached: thedevilmedium.png (2241x1209, 3.96M)

>......
>*spits*
>.......

Aside from the fact that he was actually personally threatening Martin, it was pretty clearly implied that he was molesting or at the very least grooming Janey.

the shilling on /tv is way too aggressive
I hate marketing campaigns that are so fucking obvious and offensive

i don't think these threads are. amazon does fuck all to advertise their shows and this is no exception. all of these euphoria threads that always manage to hit the bump limit on the other hand....

i haven't watched it. does kojima do anything?

Cut a guys finger of who owes money to the Yakuza.

I agree. Kino as fuck.
I found only god forgives to be a little bit boring and overdraw but this shit right here has the perfect rythm

yeah as slow as it seemed it wasnt slow enough for me to lose interest mainly the characters kept me pulled in.

lol i thought that looked like kojima but i had no idea he was in it. funny.

Please justify the final episode and the shitty monologue that explained the entire fucking show to the audience like they’re children.

It isn't exactly the same as karma, but it plays into the idea of violence being self-sustaining or cyclical. This makes Femmeboy Oedipus and his Mom-wife all the more irritating, of course.

Isn't it dangerous for those guys to be standing behind them like that? That rather confused me.

he's walking in one direction, the camera is panning and they're being killed in the other direction and the blood just disappears. the only scene the entire episode that's not just an old man nodding off and it's a fucking mess.

webm guy can I get a webm of this scene?

he's shooting at a downward angle

Last two episodes aren't as bad as you fucks said they were. they're definitely weird though

Sopranos, The Leftovers, Berlin Alexanderplatz, Out 1, Twin Peaks.

Meant for

That logic could be applied to the entire show, retard

I don’t think so.
The rest of the show is more of a slow burn, where it has a long build up to get to the point of a scene. I don’t think that was.
The episode was the worst in the series by far

Refn is a hack

I won't lie dekalog is fuego and objectively better but are you really gonna sit there and tell me paranoia agent is even on the table here? Like really nigga?

It's just an epilogue. Have you ever read a book?

I agree it was the weakest but as an epilogue I found it pretty comfy

why did Martin have to essentially work for Damien? i didnt catch that part, did damien offer protection for martin from the cartel?

its not dangerous at all. it might be that he wanted better control in post, but that clearly didnt help the quality of the show

Easy money + a sense of doing good. Plus he owed him after killing Jesus's mom

so did jesus actually fuck his mother or did he just fantasize about doing it?

after only god forgives and now this i'd love to know what kind of relationship refn had with his mother.

Attached: # 6.jpg (500x500, 96K)

I was confused whether he killed his mom as a part of a job, or while he was on duty. I think it’s the latter because the show was making it out as though he hadn’t really been working for Damien before the show, but I’m not sure:
>t. Brainlet

seems like an unpopular take around here but i really enjoyed 9. that monologue from jesus was great.

i feel like it picks up in the next couple episodes, but there are still some nice longer scenes. kind of a unique way to establish characters in the beginning though.

i think his partner worked for damien and he agreed to help. i don't think it happened on duty though. otherwise they wouldn't have needed his partner's slut GF to rat them out since an officer involved shooting would be public knowledge.

Just watched episode one. I’m intrigued... does it have pay off?

not really

Bliss

No but it's good in the moment

No it wasn't and no it didn't.

Kill yourself lying retard.

I think to those people that are truly in Los Angeles, who never leave Los Angeles, who are apart of the "entertainment industry", that his is very much their world, this is very much their experience, and this is very much their fears.

Im sure to people who are sodomites, child traffickers, rapists, casting couchers, mutilators, coke addicts with Cartel friends, that "Nazi's" and "white men" would inexplicably and irrationally seem like the "bad guys" and the bringers of Armageddon, because one day, perhaps soon 'right wing death squads' or 'literally nazi's, or "literally Hitler" is going to come for each and every last one of these type of people, and burn them from the earth with a fire.

Clearly though, they are having some sort of existential crisis in LA culture, and are at least cognizant that what they do is eventually going to have a severe consequence for them.

I think this show very much shows how the left, liberals and hollywood elite's worldview distorts completely their perception of reality. In their world, if something is beautiful, if something is photogenic, it is "GOOD" it has "value" and therefore should be praised.

Consequently, (and there is even someone literally preaching about 'fly-over states' and they are a rattlesnake that will eventually come for them, because they have been stepped on too many times) someowhere inside they must know they are infact the evil of the world. A Nazi would be very scary to someone engaging in the behavior leftists engage in.

Nazi'ism is law, order and structure incarnate. TOtDY is about the utter dissolving of all order, back to animal states of fucking, sucking and killing
