They did, but (and this might be a hot take) they made a decent effort to give it a Garth-Ennis-Y feel. They also scrambled the plot up and gave it in a different order, which bothered me at first but it ended up being a positive. It was never gonna be exactly like the comic.

Superduper did not turn. Starlight and apparently her Christian Group weren't murdering cunts. Only the more prominent heros presented seemed to have turned into evil monsters since all the fame and power corrupted them. The boys were fucked-up to begin with yes. But they did not turn into randomly-killing rapists who threw civilians from great heights for fun. They were only brutal to their targets who were evil to begin with except for Butcher who revealed his true colors in the end.

I'd forgotten how much I loved this comic for providing a more accurate depiction of what would happen if a group of super-powered civilians with zero training tried to intervene in a serious emergency. I felt like this worked as a perfect metaphor for how we've burdened these paper-thin, childish archetypes with a level of realism and moral complexity they weren't designed to handle, and demonstrates the absurdity of taking capeshit so seriously.

Sadly don't have much faith the series will hit this kind of level, but if it did and made a few Disney drones reassess their creepy obsession with superheroes, that'd be nice.
